Dream came true at Caulfield

Every owner dreams of having a horse good enough to win a Group 1 race. That dream came true for Naracoorte businessman/racing club committeeman Don Wray on the weekend at Caulfield.

Don is a part owner of the six year old grey gelding Orange County who swept to victory in the Group 1 $352,000 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400 metres. Read more

Gold Cup timing might be reviewed

The chair of the state’s peak horseracing body has mooted investigating the timing of the Gold Cup Carnival to ensure the success of the popular event in Mount Gambier.

Speaking to The Border Watch, Thoroughbred Racing SA chair Philip Bentley said the industry would canvass running the event at a warmer time of the year to reduce the risk caused by wet conditions. Read more

Heavy track at Naracoorte

For the second time in three weeks, Naracoorte racecourse will be the venue today for a transferred meeting of the Mount Gambier racing club.

Tremendous support from owners and trainers on both sides of the border has resulted in 101 final acceptors for the eight race card, with capacity fields in four events. Read more

Starting gates slow off the mark

The new set of starting gates to be used by all five Limestone Coast racing clubs are ready for use.

All that is preventing their use is the trailer to transport them between each club.

The starting gates cost around $110,000 and are currently stationed at Mount Gambier. The trailer is being built by a Mount Gambier company.

Limestone Coast Thoroughbred Racing business manager Jim May is hopeful the new starting stalls will be operating for the first time at the Penola meeting on Thursday, September 18.

Sky Channel to broadcast trots

The Mount Gambier Harness Racing Club’s Gold Cup will be beamed around the world in January after Sky Channel and Harness Racing South Australia agreed to stage two TAB meetings at Greenwald Paceway.

The Mount Gambier club has been given the green light to conduct both its Gold Cup meeting (Friday, January 23) and heats (Tuesday, January 20) under the watchful eye of Sky Channel viewers. Read more

Bleak day for favourites at Casterton

A dashing ride of the day performance by visiting Irish jockey Sean Jackson in the steeplechase was the only ray of sunshine on a bleak day for favourite punters at Casterton on Sunday.

Jackson piloted the Warrnambool jumper One Sandwich Short to an all the way victory over the hedges, the only favourite to salute on the seven race card. Read more
