Cup jockey fails breath test

Stewards have announced that jockey Justin Potter failed a breath test this morning and will not ride in the Scott Group of Companies Mount Gambier Gold Cup this afternoon.

Potter was scheduled to ride Campaspe River ($14.40 on the tote) in the main event at 3.40pm.

It’s understood Potter, who was seen drinking in a Mount Gambier hotel last night, blew .04.

Potter was also booked to ride Master McGinty in the first race at 11.26am, Unite and Excite in Race 5 and Phobias in Race 7.

Exciting finish to steeplechase

Fans of jumping races were ecstatic when the annual Mount Gambier Racing Club’s steeplechase produced an exciting finish and without incident.

The $10,000 Plenary Group Steeplechase over a gruelling 3400m was spectacular and a better finish to a jumping race you could not wish to see and it even produced a home town victory. Read more

Last year’s Scott Group of Companies Mount Gambier $25,000 Gold Cup winner, Royal Blevic will carry slightly less weight in tomorrow’s feature event, a factor that has been overlooked in early markets.

Owned and trained at Millicent, Royal Blevic will also have a change of jockey for the prestigious 2400m handicap, which dates back to 1879. Read more

The spotlight on jumps racing will turn to the Mount Gambier Racing Club when it hosts the 127th annual Scott Group of Companies Gold Cup carnival later this month.

Part of the two-day carnival on May 21-22 will be a 3400 metres steeplechase and a 3050 metres hurdle, both carrying $10,000 purses. Read more

In the space of little over an hour last Saturday, two Limestone Coast trained thoroughbreds won races on separate state metropolitan tracks.

Papal Chime, out of the Mount Gambier stables of Dennis McNamee won the $25,500 Gallipoli Handicap at Allan Scott Park Morphetville not long after the talented Brad Star, trained at Millicent by Vince Bradley won the $100,000 William Newton VC Handicap at Flemington. Read more
