Soccer academy tryouts a success

The Western Border Soccer Association held tryouts for its Junior Development Academy recently.
Around 85 boys and girls tried out for the academy, representing every Western Border Soccer Association and South East Women’s Football Association clubs, leaving organisers thrilled with the turnout. Read more
Ferguson claims second top award

Sixteen-year-old Blue Lake Soccer Club protege Callum Ferguson is believed to have created soccer history in the immediate Mount Gambier region.
Ferguson was recently named winner of the BLSC’s under 17 best and fairest award … nothing unusual about that. Read more
Centrals win cup final 4-1

Centrals is the 2008 Shadows/Belgiorno Cup champion. The Lions defeated International at Casidio Park 4-1 on Sunday to claim the prize and head to next season full of hope as they look to reclaim the mantle as the top club in Western Border soccer.
“The best part about the win was that we played the game the right way for the full 90 minutes,” Centrals coach Shane Dycer told The Border Watch. Read more
Inter favoured to win cup final

The Western Border Soccer Association’s version of England’s FA Cup - the Shadows/Belgiorno Cup - is on this Sunday and while International are a red hot favourite to win a third successive title, try telling that to the Gambier Centrals.
International have been the undisputed powerhouse of the WBSA over the last five years, claiming successive A Grade premierships and three Shadows/Belgiorno Cups, to extend its tally to seven since the abridged tournament originated in 1988 as the Javeds Cup. Read more

Centrals defeated Apollo 4-2 in Sunday’s Shadows/Belgirno’s Cup semi-final.
These two clubs clashed three weeks earlier in the Top 4 shoot out that Centrals won after full time, extra time and penalties. Read more

Great results in girls’ soccer

Following the recently completed South East Women’s Football Association regular season, players and officials have been busy at two other major tournaments.
SEWFA under 16 and under 13 teams have just returned from Mildura where they competed in the annual South Australian country junior championships with two terrific results. Read more

WBSA suspends brawl clubs

The Western Border Soccer Association has suspended both the Gambier City Sharks and the Millicent United clubs from all remaining fixtures for the 2008 season and will appoint a three-person independent disciplinary committee to investigate the events of last Sunday’s match, which was abandoned because of player and crowd behaviour.
WBSA chief executive Bob Sandow said yesterday the board had met on Tuesday night and tabled a number of official reports from referees, coaches, players and WBSA officials who were at the match. Read more
