Ryan debuts for Glenelg

Former North Gambier key forward Wade Ryan, 21, will make his debut with Glenelg in the SANFL on Sunday.
Ryan, who was a key to the SA Tigers reaching the 2007 Western Border Football League grand final, is likely to spend the opening rounds of the SANFL season in the reserves before making a push to play in the seniors. Read more
Domain playground open

The Domain adventure playground in Millicent opened on Thursday, March 27 and is now available for community use.
The playground provides equipment for use by children of all ages including wheelchair access to many items of equipment, a Liberty Swing and outdoor exercise equipment for use by adults. Read more
NAB closes Penola branch

The National Australia Bank (NAB) says a significant decrease of walk-in customers has forced the closure of its Penola branch.
The bank has announced the branch will close on July 11 and staff will be redeployed.
Solid sale results

Mount Gambier combined agents’ monthly store cattle sale last Wednesday was solid without being spectacular, with weaner steers topping at $580 and the best of the heifers $560.
Smaller cattle under 300 kilograms in the 1171-head yarding sold well but the bigger cattle were $30 to $40 cheaper than expected. Read more
Divers plunge to new depths

A team of eight technical divers will undertake deep research dives to the bottom of Blue Lake this weekend (March 29-30, 2008).
City councillor Jim Maher said the purpose was to take sediment cores from the bed of the Blue Lake at a depth of about 70 metres to test for pollution. It is part of a larger project established by the South East Natural Resources Management Board.
It is the first such diving event in the Blue Lake of this kind, as previous scientific dives were limited to 30 metres depth. Read more
Millicent to host carnival

The Elastoplast Cup will be held on Saturday, March 29 at Millicent’s McLaughlin Park beginning at 9am (SA). All Western Border sides will field senior football sides with all teams excluding Casterton to field a junior and senior netball side.
With rules allowing for fast paced and exciting football, the format lends itself to playing new and existing players in various positions and allowing junior players exposure at senior level. It is also a great opportunity for clubs to participate in practice matches with everything arranged on behalf of the clubs. Read more
Charity rider hits trail

Charity rider Ken Tuckey is hitting the trail again, this time for Kids Cancer Research Trust and Breast Cancer Australia.
The veteran fundraiser will visit numerous towns including Bordertown, Naracoorte and Penola. His journey will begin on March 25 and finish June 1. Read more
Divers find man’s body

Victorian police divers have found the body of a Mount Gambier man missing in the Glenelg River since Sunday.
Stephen Walker’s body was found submerged in the murky water through the use of sonar equipment.
The grim discovery followed extensive search efforts by Victorian and South Australian emergency service workers after the 31-year-old was reported missing about 6.30pm while on a day trip to the river, about 35km from Nelson.
Daylight saving

What do people in the South East think of daylight saving? Western Australia has just completed the second year of a three-year trial and the consensus seemed to be in opposition, especially to the March 30 finish.
Western Australians were still in the dark at 7am towards the end of the trial, which was extended later in the month this year to fall into line with the eastern states.
I lived in Ceduna for 18 months and daylight saving wasn’t very popular there either, for the same reason.
