Low-density urban development planned

Grant District Council has foreshadowed its intention to rezone land on the western fringe of Mount Gambier to allow for a 300-plus urban housing subdivision development.

Council has announced it will consider rezoning land on the corner of O’Leary Road and Wireless Road West from country living to a low density urban residential zone and has called for public subdivisions on the proposal. Read more

Long-term plans for blues festival

The Blue Lake Blues and Roots Festival appears set to be an annual fixture on Mount Gambier’s major events calendar, despite only 300 ticket-buyers attending the inaugural concert last weekend.

Millicent-based organiser Dale Nitschke took a hit of tens of thousands of dollars when the droves of people he hoped would turn up on the day failed to eventuate, despite sunny weather, twelve highly-regarded acts and strong facilities at McDonald Park. Read more

South East remains on target to break a 10-year drought in the BankSA Country Cricket Carnival, currently being played in metropolitan Adelaide.

After a dominant five wicket victory over Mid North in Tuesday’s opening round, South East continued on its winning way on Wednesday with a 10 run win over Yorke Peninsula at the Henley Oval. Read more

It is official — the South East is one of the happiest regions in Australia to live.

According to a new snapshot of 180 regions across Australia, people living in the South East are happier than those living in inner city metropolitan areas.

The Australian Unity Wellbeing Index shows Warrnambool/Portland on top the list, followed by the Upper South East at number two on the national survey. Read more

Fishermen ‘confused’ over marine parks

The release of provisional outer boundaries for two new marine parks in the South East has given recreational and commercial fishermen no clearer picture of how they will be affected.

South East Professional Fisherman’s Association president Joel Redman said although fishermen had attended public consultation meetings with the Department of Environment and Heritage, they were still confused and apprehensive. Read more

Little aths cancelled because of heat

The Mount Gambier District Little Athletics Centre has cancelled tonight’s planned competition because of heat conditions.

MGDLAC secretary Jenny Wilkie said the Centre has rarely had to implement its heat policy, but with the excessive temperatures currently hitting South Australia, the welfare of junior athletes was paramount.

Competition for the MGDLAC would go ahead next Friday as planned, weather permitting.

Animal health concerns in heat wave

Animal health was a prime concern at livestock sales this week as temperatures soared into the forties.

The weather was expected to soften the market during the annual weaner and store sales.

While heat was seeing South East and Western Victoria buyers withdraw from the market, an earlier floor coming from Kidman’s and the Birdsville Track has also waned. Read more

Stobie poles face the chop

Stobie poles and power lines along the north side of Commercial Street will soon be placed underground as part of an ongoing project to improve the landscape of the city centre.

From early February the stobie poles and power lines in Caldwell Street, Commerce Place carpark and parts of Gray and Elizabeth Streets will be removed from sight. Read more

Call for road rule changes to be notified

The State Opposition has called on the government to notify the community of road rule changes more effectively after claiming 99 changes were implemented this week.

Shadow Minister for Road Safety Stephen Wade said the notification of changes to road rules should be included with registration and licence renewal notices. Read more
