Accidental motorist disqualified

An 88-year-old man who pleaded guilty to driving unlicensed and without due care on September 30 last year has been convicted and disqualified from driving by the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court.

The defendant, Raffaele Renzi, said this was fine by him as he had handed in his licence to the Registrar of Motor Vehicles a year before the incident. Read more

Smokers told to clean up their act

Smokers who “don’t give a damn” have been asked to dispose of their butts in an environmentally safe way or risk heavy fines.

The CFS is strongly supporting Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday to promote a fire-conscious community.

South East CFS fire prevention officer Phil McDonough said cigarette butts that were thrown on the side of the road or in open areas without being extinguished created a litter problem and a fire danger. Read more

Dust blamed for powerline fires

Three recent power outages in the South East may have resulted from humid weather causing a build-up of dust in electrical lines, according to ETSA Utilities spokesman Paul Roberts.

The most recent outage occurred near Hatherleigh on the Princes Highway on Wednesday morning after an insulator current flashover started a small grass fire. Read more

Vegetation build-up fuels fire fears

Frustration over native vegetation protection leading to a build-up of roadside fire fuels led to concerns being aired at a meeting in Coonawarra yesterday.

Local government leaders through to agency, church and charity organisation representatives attended a Regional Communities Consultative Council forum at Chardonnay Lodge, where the state body called for comment on key issues for the region. Read more

A push to hold this year’s Christmas Parade at night has been placed on the backburner, following concerns raised about the logistics of an evening event and if the community would support such a dramatic change.

Emergency paging service flawed

Concerns have been raised about the effectiveness of South Australia’s CFS emergency paging service.

The State Opposition claims to have seen a leaked email from the CFS to police admitting that crews were “seriously hampered” in joining the Victorian fire effort.

According to the email, problems arose from four-hour delays in CFS pager messages preventing a conference to plan for crew deployments. Read more
