South Gambier Cricket Club has returned to the top of the tree after an eight year drought in the Barber Shield.

South turned the two day grand final at Frew Park on its end on Saturday when it routed debutant team, the Northern Knights for just 134. Read more

Mount Richmond Fire continues

A forest fire continues to burn north east of the Portland-Nelson Road, near Mount Richmond.

The north-westerly corner of the fire is near Skyline Road, approximately one kilometre south of the Normanby Track.

The fire is not currently posing a threat to communities and the current fire activity is very quiet resulting in a low rate of fire spread. Read more

New library may open on Sundays

Mount Gambier’s new public library may open on Sundays, according to manager Cathryn Harris.

However, it will be up to the community to tell City Council what hours it wants the facility to open.

Ms Harris said the flexibility of the building could allow opening of the youth area after hours, allowing access to gaming consoles, graphic novels and the cafe. Read more

Street racing concerns played down

As calls for an off-street drag racing venue increase in metropolitan areas, the issue of illegal street racing in Mount Gambier is not as intense, according to local police.

Following last weekend’s fatal Magill drag-racing crash, Shadow Road Safety Minister Stephen Wade called on the State Government to fast track a proposal for an off-street racing facility to help deal with illegal street racing. Read more

TAFE graduates recognised

The achievements of Mount Gambier’s TAFE SA 2008 graduates were celebrated at a ceremony in the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre recently.

The evening was hosted by Roberta Coke and Ashim Datt who welcomed more than 300 guests alongside the 85 graduates and opened with a pictorial presentation of the 2008 academic year in review. Read more

North Gambier wins Elastoplast Cup

North Gambier kicked a competition record score to successfully defend its Elastoplast Cup in the pre-season opener for the Western Border Football League on Saturday.

The one-day footy carnival at McDonald Park was an unqualified success with all 10 WBFL clubs showcasing some of its prized big name recruits and giving the opportunity to blood some exciting new youngsters. Read more

Smoke nothing to be alarmed about

The CFS advises residents that smoke may be visible across parts of Mount Gambier and the Lower South East due to a prescribed burn in Western Victoria today.

CFS regional coordinator Phil McDonough said a significant amount of smoke was travelling across the Lower South East due to a 600ha prescribed burn at Kentbruck, between Nelson and Portland. Read more

Daylight saving ends this weekend

South East residents are reminded that daylight savings will conclude on Sunday, April 5.

Drink drivers suffer consequences

Mount Gambier police caught three drink drivers in South Australia’s “Operation Consequence” weekend blitz which saw 112 motorists reported across the state.

Of these, 68 drivers were issued with an immediate loss of licence. Read more
