Cycling legend honoured

The former cycling clubrooms at the rear of the Vansittart Park Oval grandstand will be named the Alex Roberts Centre in recognition of the Mount Gambier cycling icon.
The Blue Lake Highland Pipe band currently leases the building from council, which operates as a multi-functional community centre.
The name was suggested to council by various users of the building.
Fire restrictions end April 30

Fire restrictions in the Lower South East end at midnight tonight (April 30).
South East CFS regional commander Brett Merritt said the uniform constraints on burning off, campfires, barbecues and use of outdoor equipment such as angle grinders would be lifted. Read more
House fire sparks chimney warning

A house fire overnight in Bordertown has sparked a CFS warning to keep chimneys clean and in good order.
Four CFS appliances attended the fire, which started about 3.01am.
Occupants of the home were alerted to the fire by a working smoke alarm and escaped injury. Read more
Swine flu fears hit pork industry

One of South Australia’s largest pig producers has moved to calm fears over the outbreak of swine flu, but has warned the full ramifications of the mutated strain is not yet known.
Myora Farm near Mount Gambier has been forced to beef up biosecurity protocols at its 500-pig a week operation, following swine flu sweeping several countries and suspected cases being reported in Australia. Read more
Admella history taught

South East schools will have access to regional historic material following the release a DVD and teacher resource kit documenting the shipwreck of the Admella.
“Wreck of the Admella” DVDs are now being sold through the Grant District Council and teaching kits have been distributed to schools throughout the region. Read more
Coroner examines birthing guidelines

TAFE staff stuck in ‘transit lounge’

An angry Mount Gambier TAFE worker has raised fresh allegations the State Government is beginning to cut employment contracts at the facility as part of a move to significantly slash operating costs.
While senior management positions are earmarked to be cut under a major restructure, it is understood a number of staff on contracts are now facing the unemployment queue. Read more
