Union slams export of sawlogs

The region’s timber union boss has slammed a state-owned forestry company for signing a deal to export 100,000 tonnes of sawlogs from South East pine plantations.

Union leader Brad Coates yesterday called on the State Government to halt the export of sawlogs from the South East by Forestry SA, which he claimed would cost local jobs. Read more

Pioneers defeat Cobras 102 – 97

The Scotts of Mount Gambier Pioneers defeated the Kilsyth Cobras 102 – 97 at the Icehouse tonight.

Mount Gambier trailed by four points at half time, but scored 55 to 46 in the second half.

Kevin Smith top scored for the home side with 30 points while Dallas Jeffree contribued 20 and Keith Benjamin 15.

Andrew Rice stole seven rebounds and Jason Sedlock six. Chris Mason chipped in with four steals.

The Pioneers shot 36 field goals from 75 attempts (48 percent) compared with 38/92 (41 percent) by Kilsyth.

Wattle Range rates to rise 2.3pc

Wattle Range Council ratepayers face a general rate increase of 2.3pc and a rate cap of 2pc in 2009-10 after council adopted the draft of its annual business plan on Tuesday night.

The annual business plan and budget was discussed at length by councillors and staff, with the rate revenue increase and rate cap the main issues. Read more

The National Association of Forest Industries (NAFI) has welcomed the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Corporations and Financial Services inquiry into agribusiness management investment schemes.

Stardust Circus has arrived in Mount Gambier and will be at the showgrounds until June 7.

Promoted as “Australia’s largest animal circus”, Stardust features performing lions, ponies and monkeys along with trapeze artists, acrobats and clowns.

A trapeze artist from Columbia is making his first appearance in Mount Gambier while some of Australia’s best acrobats and spring boarders promise an entertaining show. Read more

Youth Allowance changes unfair

In Mount Gambier, taking a gap year between high school and university has become the only way for most students to be able to afford the huge expense of higher education.

Of the 100+ students who enrolled in Year 12 at Mount Gambier High School in 2008, only two went on to university straight away, the rest have been hard at work this year in our local community, attempting to earn $19,500 to be deemed as independent under the old Youth Allowance guidelines.
