New era for regional development

A tripartite agreement to establish a new regional development consultative organisation was signed in Adelaide today.

The Commonwealth Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Development and Local Government Maxine McKew, SA Minister for Regional Development Paul Caica, and the Local Government Association’s Felicity-ann Lewis formally reached agreement on arrangements for Regional Development Australia. Read more

Severe weather warning lifted

The weather bureau has lifted a severe weather warning for the South East.

In an update at 4.13am on Wednesday the bureau said conditions have eased, but further localised wind squalls of more than 90kmh may be possible about southern coastal districts again this afternoon. Read more

Alleged crash driver released on bail

The Supreme Court released Michael John Smith, of Millicent, from custody on Friday morning after he spent more than two weeks on remand at the Mount Gambier Prison.

Mr Smith, 20, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving after his vehicle rolled over on Rendelsham Road, near Millicent, on the morning of June 7. Read more

Uncertainty clouds plantation forestry

Green Triangle Regional Plantation Committee executive John Kellas said Federal Forestry Minister Tony Burke’s “Preparing Forest Industries for the Future” statement revisited existing policies dating back to the early 1990s. Read more

Anger rises over marine park boundaries

South East stakeholders will make a last ditch attempt this week to convince the State Government to scale back its sweeping marine park boundaries, in a move to lessen the impact on the multi-million-dollar commercial and recreational fishing sectors.

Local government, recreational and commercial fishers met at short notice yesterday to urgently re-examine a proposal sent to the State Government which recommended the area declared should be trimmed to 20pc of the current proposal. Read more

Mitch Williams quits Shadow Cabinet

South East Liberal MP Mitch Williams has publicly called for his embattled leader to resign while quitting the frontbench himself in a dramatic move to force a change of leadership.

Mr Williams told The Border Watch he would contest the leadership if it became vacant.

Following the fake documents political scandal that engulfed the party in recent months, Mr Williams claimed Martin Hamilton-Smith’s leadership was now not viable and it was time for him to go. Read more
