New look for Rotary lookout

The Rotary Club lookout overlooking the Blue Lake is undergoing a makeover thanks to Target Work students from the Independent Learning Centre under the supervision of local builder Ben Merchant.
The project began on June 29 and students have been working at the site one day a week since.
The old pavers, hand rails, windbreak and the concrete floor have been removed. Read more
70th anniversary for parent club

The Mil Lel Parent Club celebrated its 70th anniversary on Wednesday as past and present members returned to reminisce and acknowledge the milestone.
Current club president Vanessa Lassaline hosted the afternoon and introduced several speakers including principal Brian Duke, past parent Merle Judd and past student Grant District Council mayor Don Pegler. Read more

Funding bid for visiting surgeon

The Australian Craniofacial Unit has applied for funding to bring a visiting surgeon to Mount Gambier on a regular basis.
“It just makes sense to bring a surgeon to Mount Gambier, instead of patients travelling to Adelaide for operations,” Craniofacial Foundation chief executive Bob Snewin said. Read more
River shack valuations questioned

A licensed Mount Gambier valuer has raised concerns over the State Government’s decision to substantially lift rentals for shack holders along the Glenelg River.
Herbert Real Estate principal David Herbert accused the government of not being upfront with shack holders over their skyrocketing rental bills. Read more

Gunns has emerged as a potential bidder for Timbercorp and Great Southern’s bluegum assets on the back of the announcement it has been chosen as the preferred provider of a second hardwood chip facility at the Port of Portland.
The port infrastructure announcement yesterday signalled a major step towards cashing in on the Green Triangle’s extensive bluegum estate. Read more

Mt Gambier popular with first homebuyers

Mount Gambier is among the five top postcodes in South Australia for first homebuyers popularity, according to new figures.
Nearly 300 government grants were issued to Mount Gambier first homebuyers last financial year.
Topping the state was the Salisbury area, followed by Morphett Vale/Woodcroft and the Andrews Farm/Blakeview area. Read more

Casterton Racing Club officials are furious that its famed steeple track has been ploughed with one race meeting still to be run this year.
Unbeknown to CRC officials the Committee of Management which operates the racetrack — which is on crown land — ploughed the infield earlier this week. Read more
