East Gambier lights upgrade planned

East Gambier Sportsman’s Club is proposing to undertake a $230,000 overhaul of the lighting system at McDonald Park to cement the venue as the region’s sporting hub.

The football club, which has made a funding application to the State Government and scheduled to meet a high level politician, has proposed installing four 25-metre towers around the ground. Read more

Wee blue cubes save water

A wee blue cube is all it takes to keep some of the public urinals in Mount Gambier clean and odourless.

The Mount Gambier City Council turned off the taps to urinals in public toilets in the Civic Centre, the Cave Gardens, James Street and Ripley Arcade two years ago for a trial period to test the results of waterless urinals. Read more

Dirty tricks claim in scone-gate affair

Independent Member for Mount Gambier Rory McEwen yesterday lambasted the Opposition for claiming he had wasted taxpayers’ money on two expensive bottles of wine and labelled it a “dirty tricks campaign” to get Liberal candidate Steve Perryman over the line.

“If all that they can come up with is two bottles of wine and half a scone in five years while I was a minister, then good lord that is just ridiculous — they are just grasping at straws,” Mr McEwen told The Border Watch. Read more

Can’t legislate for stupidity

Young licence holders won’t like the State Government’s relentless push for tighter provisional licence restrictions, which now includes a bill to ban P platers from driving cars with more than six cylinders of power.

If this comes to fruition, regional V8 vehicle owners and their teenagers will be hugely inconvenienced as many locations are not within walking distance and there is no public transport. Read more

Mount Schank mine bid rejected

The State Government has rejected an application by a Mount Gambier company to mine a section of the state heritage-listed Mount Schank precinct.

The application by Gambier Earthmovers proposed extending its current mining application in the area. Read more

More tough new rules for P platers

In a move to further reduce South Australia’s road toll, the State Government will introduce legislation banning P1 and P2 drivers from getting behind the wheel of cars with eight cylinders under the hood.

Several new measures aimed at provisional licence holders aged under 25 will be introduced to State Parliament next month. Read more

Yurika Sema top seed for Classic

Improving Japanese player Yurika Sema has been named the top seed for the City of Mount Gambier Blue Lake Women’s Classic from October 5 – 11.

Sema is ranked 147 in the world.

Hopes to secure the $1.5b Penola Pulp Mill could be lost if the consortium led by developer Protavia does not end up at the top of the list of bidders for Timbercorp’s forestry assets this week.

Port of Portland chief executive Scott Paterson told The Border Watch at Friday’s opening of the Myamyn chip mill that activity in the bluegum sector was moving toward export of chips to Japan and beyond into China and Asia. Read more

Chips are loaded into one of two large B-double trucks that are now operating around the clock to deliver chips from the Myamyn mill to the Port of Portland.
