Frustration with city-centric governance by the major parties has prompted Mount Gambier man Henk Bruins to stand for the Family First Party at next year’s state election.
“I have always lived in Mount Gambier and love our area, but am somewhat incensed by what I see as the overlooking of our region all the time — the government is increasingly city centric,” he told The Border Watch. Read more
Shock jumps racing ban slammed

A veteran Mount Gambier jumps racing trainer has described a decision by Racing Victoria Limited to ban the sport after 2010 as an “absolute bombshell” for the local industry.
Jumps trainer John O’Connor, from Mingbool, described the decision as a shock and said it could lead to the demise of jumps racing in South Australia. Read more
Hargreaves wins Mount Gambier Gift

Victorian Shaun Hargreaves was the outstanding performer at the ninth annual Mount Gambier RSL Classic Carnival on Saturday.
The talented 21-year-old won the $10,000 120m final after earlier winning the 70m sprint handicap.
Hargreaves, who — by his own admission — had not won anything of note in his running career — had just centimetres to spare from the luckless Alex Saliu, who also ran second in the recent Whyalla Gift. Read more

A Mount Gambier teenager who allegedly distributed revealing photos of his ex-girlfriend to schoolmates will face the Youth Court in coming months.
The boy, 16, has been accused of sending child pornography to his peers via text message. Read more

Stage icon Max Gillies and television comedy legend Kym Gyngell are among the stars who will appear on the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre stage next year in Country Arts SA’s packed 2010 performing arts program.
A performance of songs from the great Cat Stevens, a family circus show, complete ballet and the return of the Melbourne Comedy Festival Roadshow also feature, along with children’s shows and the Morning Melodies collection. Read more
Admella wins Battle of the Bands

Members of Mount Gambier five-piece Admella rushed from work to the Shadows stage last Friday night to perform a solid half hour set and take out the top band award at the city’s annual Battle of the Bands.
The new wave hardcore metal band, featuring 22 year old vocalist Jacob Bradley, 17 year olds Tom Wilson on guitar and Nathan Wilson on bass, 19 year old Gavin Robertson on guitar and 28 year old drummer Steve Davis, won a PA system from Dale Cleves Yamaha for their efforts. Read more

Stawell champ favoured for Gift

Former Stawell Gift champion Adrian Mott will be the headline act at tomorrow’s ninth annual Mount Gambier RSL Classic Carnival at Vansittart Park.
Mott of the inner Melbourne suburb of Essendon, won the 2006 Stawell Gift as a 20-year-old running from 7.25m and stopping the clock 11.98 seconds. Read more
