Hot weather forced the cancellation of the fourth day of competition in the 80th annual Mount Gambier Bowls Club’s Christmas Carnival.
The popular open mixed fours tournament was scheduled for yesterday, but with temperatures forecast to reach 38, club officials had no hesitation in calling the event off. Read more

Car caught fire at Tarpeena

Country Fire Service crews believe a busted fuel line was responsible for a car fire on the Riddoch Highway at Tarpeena during Wednesday afternoon’s blistering 38-degree heat.
Tarpeena CFS brigade captain Peter Balnaves said he was unsure exactly how the vehicle caught alight, but suspected a petrol leak came into contact with the hot exhaust and combusted. Read more

Concern at possible wine tax change

Family First MLC Robert Brokenshire has written to the Premier and Federal Treasurer urging them not to heed proposals for a volumetric tax system that would see big hikes in taxation on the wine export industry.
The review notes that per standard drink, spirits are taxed at 87c, full-strength packaged beer at 39c, bottled wine by large producers at 49c, large producers of cask wine at 5c and small producers of bottled wine at 0c. Read more

CFS adds new fire warning service

With South Australia expecting a long hot summer, the Country Fire Service has launched a new service that increases the availability and functionality of bushfire information for the public.
CFS Chief Officer Euan Ferguson said that providing timely information to the community about bushfire threats is almost as important as fighting the fire itself. Read more
