New Year celebration will be repeated

Mount Gambier will usher in 2011 with a community event following the success of the city’s first major celebration in several years.
The Mount Gambier Community Events management committee, which was behind last year’s celebrations, said the decision to hold the event next year was not difficult and planning had already begun. Read more
UniSA growth predicted in Mount Gambier

Activity may boom at Mount Gambier’s UniSA campus if the course offerings can expand in coming years, according to regional centre head Sarah Mott.
She welcomed more than 60 students to the campus for 2010 yesterday as the academic year began.
“The majority of the students are from the Limestone Coast, which demonstrates the need for regional tertiary education,” Dr Mott said. Read more
Union backs MacKillop independent

Paper workers have voted to back independent Darren O’Halloran in the electorate of MacKillop to highlight the hundreds of local manufacturing jobs put at risk after the Federal Government allowed foreign-made toilet paper to be dumped in Australia.
The Millicent sub-branch of the CFMEU Pulp and Paper Division this week agreed to provide financial and practical support for Mr O’Halloran’s campaign. Read more

Comedy Lessons in Chocolate, rated M, screens at 6pm, featuring the story of Mattia, who is about to close the biggest deal of his professional life, when his illegally-hired worker Kamal is badly injured when he falls off scaffolding. Read more

Five Mount Gambier boxers headed to Adelaide last Saturday where they fought against some very tough opponents.
Ben McKinnon, Justin Medoro, Neil Gysbers and Sammy Jakutavius fought while trainer Colin Cassidy pulled Kirk Smith out prior to his fight due to the opponent not being suitable for Smith. Read more
Guilty plea recorded for illegal fishing

A 55-year-old Port MacDonnell commercial fisher was convicted and fined $5000 in the Portland Magistrates’ Court this week for rock lobster fishing inside Victorian waters during the closed season.
Ian Maxwell Perryman pleaded guilty to three charges relating to the unauthorised use of commercial fishing equipment during a closed season and attempting to take rock lobster during a closed season. Read more
