Financial crisis hits forestry sector

After avoiding the worst of the economic fallout from the global financial crisis in 2008, Australia’s forest sector is now experiencing some adverse effects according to a new ABARE report.

The biannual report, Australian forest and wood products statistics, reveals a significant downturn in forest product production and exports, as the industry is affected by the international downturn in forest products trade and a drop in domestic housing sector demand. Read more

Carbon scheme hits dairyfarmers

Dairyfarmers will be among the hardest hit financially by the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, according to a new ABARE report.

Impacts from CPRS will vary based on the proportion of emissions intensive inputs, the emissions intensity of production and the extent to which agricultural processors also pass on their increased costs to farmers.

Challenging time for wine industry

The Australian wine industry is facing a difficult period in the coming years as competition in export markets increases and global demand for wine slows, pushing prices down, ABARE’s Outlook conference heard on Tuesday.

ABARE senior economist Dr Brenda Dyack said conditions would be particularly tough in 2008-09 and 2009-10, with declining wine sales forecast to continue. Read more

Winter crops outlook positive

Despite winter rainfall across the Australian grains belt being average or below average, the timing of the rains has been opportune and crops are in a reasonable position leading into spring, according to ABARE’s September issue of the Australian Crop Report.

“Although conditions have been variable across regions, there is optimism for an improved winter grains harvest in 2008-09,” said ABARE’s executive director Phillip Glyde. Read more
