Grant District Council’s independent planning assessors have given the green light to the $2.72m rebuild of The Oaks Nursing Home.

Aged care nursing scholarships announced

Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot yesterday announced $9.5m in nursing scholarships to train and upskill up to 680 people, particularly in rural and regional areas.

Ms Elliot made the announcement during the three-day 19th annual Tri-state aged care conference at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre in Mount Gambier, which attracted representatives of the aged care sector from New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Read more

Gastro prompts aged care lockdown

An outbreak of gastroenteritis in the St Mary’s aged care facility has forced a lockdown to prevent the spreading of a highly contagious virus to the community.

Visitors and volunteer workers to the Hakea dementia unit have been prevented from entering the unit since Sunday, activities have been cancelled and notices to discourage visits have been erected since a number of patients and staff became infected with a highly contagious gastroenteritis virus. Concern at proposed rates exemption

Mount Gambier City Council has raised concerns over a draft bill that proposes to fix lower rates and charges for people living in retirement villages and caravan parks.

At a major council committee meeting this week, corporate and community services director Grant Humphries warned the proposal could leave a $120,000 black hole in council’s yearly budget. Read more
