BWS makes way for Dan Murphy’s

The BWS bottle store behind the Federal Hotel is being demolished to make way for the construction of the first Dan Murphy’s store in the South East.
Site manager Rick Monte said the trading area of the supermarket style store, with its entrance on Crouch Street, would be 1030 square metres. Read more
Hotel barring orders praised

Police have barred more than 900 miscreants from South Australian pubs and clubs, including 35 people across the Limestone Coast, since new laws were introduced last August.
Under the new legislation police were given the power to bar people from licensed venues for offensive or disorderly behaviour in or near the premises, reasons of criminal intelligence or to protect a person or their family. Read more
Alcohol interlock becomes mandatory

About 2700 serious drink-driving offenders across South Australia will have interlocks fitted to their vehicles when tough new laws come into full effect this month, following the success of the voluntary interlock scheme.
South East police operations manager Sgt Andy Stott said the push to make interlocks mandatory for serious offenders was necessary in the fight against repeat offending. Read more
Police blitz ends without major trouble

The national police blitz dubbed Operation Unite to curb alcohol-fuelled violence passed without major incident in Mount Gambier on the weekend.
Five Southern Traffic Enforcement officers, a Liquor Licensing Enforcement Branch officer, 10 Tactical Response Unit police and 11 members of the Limestone Coast police force patrolled the streets, pubs and clubs on Friday and Saturday nights. Read more

The Australian Hotels Association has welcomed the South Australian Government’s proposed amendments to define intoxication more clearly.
Consumer Affairs Minister Gail Gago announced reforms to the Liquor Licensing Act today.
“Bar staff have long grappled with whether they may be serving someone who is considered drunk,” Ms Gago said. Read more
Football final booze tests

Police will be patrolling roads leading away from the Mid South East Football Netball League second semi-final at Kalangadoo on Saturday in a bid to dissuade potential drink-drivers from risking lives.

Don’t drink and drive to a police station

A man who voluntarily walked into the Mount Gambier police station on private business had his licence disqualified for three months when he pleaded guilty in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court last week to drink driving.
The court heard police saw the defendant park a Toyota Landcruiser on Bay Road and enter the station to identify himself in relation to another matter on March 18. Read more
Council debates liquor trading hours

Mount Gambier councillor Des Mutton has called on City Council to take a stand against hotels continuing to gain extended operating hours in the city.
“I’m getting sick and tired of us as a council agreeing to longer and longer hours being sought by hotels,” he told council’s meeting on Tuesday night during debate about the Park Hotel’s liquor licence. Read more
Lockdown trial extended

The trial period of Mount Gambier’s voluntary liquor lockdown at pubs and clubs will continue until it is reviewed again on May 12.
Despite fears that a lockdown could lead to financial loss, licensees in May last year agreed to shut their doors for a trial period to patrons at 2am to help curb drunken behaviour on the streets. Read more
