Hargreaves wins Mount Gambier Gift

Victorian Shaun Hargreaves was the outstanding performer at the ninth annual Mount Gambier RSL Classic Carnival on Saturday.
The talented 21-year-old won the $10,000 120m final after earlier winning the 70m sprint handicap.
Hargreaves, who — by his own admission — had not won anything of note in his running career — had just centimetres to spare from the luckless Alex Saliu, who also ran second in the recent Whyalla Gift. Read more
Stawell champ favoured for Gift

Former Stawell Gift champion Adrian Mott will be the headline act at tomorrow’s ninth annual Mount Gambier RSL Classic Carnival at Vansittart Park.
Mott of the inner Melbourne suburb of Essendon, won the 2006 Stawell Gift as a 20-year-old running from 7.25m and stopping the clock 11.98 seconds. Read more
Engler coming to Gift carnival

Newly crowned Australian marathon champion, Dale Engler — formerly of Mount Gambier — is a confirmed starter for the Mount Gambier RSL Gift Carnival later this month.
Engler (27) will be the drawcard runner in the 1600m backmarkers handicap, an event he has contested five times previously. Read more
Bigger purse for Mount Gambier Gift

The South Australian professional athletic season started last weekend and next month’s Mount Gambier Gift Carnival will take on a much higher level of prominence for most athletes this summer.
Scheduled for November 28, the one day carnival, which is now in its ninth year since undergoing a massive overhaul will carry the second biggest purse of the 14 pro carnivals on this summer’s roster. Read more

Little aths cancelled because of heat

The Mount Gambier District Little Athletics Centre has cancelled tonight’s planned competition because of heat conditions.
MGDLAC secretary Jenny Wilkie said the Centre has rarely had to implement its heat policy, but with the excessive temperatures currently hitting South Australia, the welfare of junior athletes was paramount.
Competition for the MGDLAC would go ahead next Friday as planned, weather permitting.
Talented athletes compete in Canberra

Six members of the Mount Gambier Athletic Talent and Development Squad competed at the Pacific School Games in Canberra earlier this month.
Millicent student, Chris Hale from Tantanoola competed in the javelin, finishing seventh with a 49 metre throw. Read more
