Amazing South innings clinches win
December 11, 2008
Eleven hits, five walks, a couple of errors and 15 runs sounds like a pretty good game of baseball.
Unfortunately for Centrals Magpies that was one amazing innings of batting by South in last Friday night’s Mount Gambier Baseball League feature match.
Magpies, batted first and scored in the opening innings when Blair Branstone crossed the home plate after an error from the South infield.
South responded immediately with improved youngster Travis Lockwood getting a walk and moving his way around the bases and crossing home plate after a wild pitch.
Magpies scored their second run in the third innings when Michael Jordan was rewarded for his safe hit to right field and scored from a rare passed ball by South’s pitcher Bruce Morale.
The Magpies players were supporting their starting pitcher Vic Bentvelzen with South only scoring one run in the opening four innings and the game looking like it was going to be a long hard fought battle.
South came out in the bottom of the fifth and did what it has done so many times this season and belted the ball around the diamond and assisted by some Magpies errors scored eight runs, turning a one run deficit into a seven run lead.
In the top of the sixth the margin was reduced by one when Jamie Whitehead scored for Magpies.
Then in the bottom of the sixth in what can only be described as an amazing innings of power hitting, South belted the ball all over the Blue Lake Diamond and ended the innings with an extraordinary 15 runs.
Highlights included Dean Lane’s three safe hits from as many bats in the innings with Travis Lockwood and Morale getting two each.
The game mercifully ended in the bottom of the seventh with South scoring one further run and ran out comfortable 25 – 3 winners.
For South Dean Lane was the stand out hitter with five safe hits from six bats and finished the game with the catching gear on when starting catcher Damien O’Dine couldn’t continue due to injury.
Bruce Morale had four hits, Travis Lockwood, Ben Morale and Michael Priestley had three each. For Magpies Jeremy Aston was their only multiple hitter with two.
Federals v Tigers
Even the return to the South East of starting pitcher Craig Wright to the Federals line-up didn’t help it get the points in Saturday night’s game against Tigers.
Tigers batted first but failed to score in the opening inning with Federals scoring once when Scott Simpson got home from a Brad Lynagh safe hit.
For Federals this was its only run in the game with Tigers starting pitcher Karl Ransom offering another outstanding game supported with some excellent fielding.
Tigers scored their first run with junior Levi Morton being walked and eventually scoring from a Jake Cairns safe hit to left field.
Tigers scored two more in the third with Karl Ransom and Brad Allen both getting safe hits followed by two walks scoring Ransom first.
A painful RBI for Toby Burner scored the second run when he was hit by a pitched ball allowing Allen to cross home plate.
Tigers’ best innings was the sixth when they scored three runs with an opening three bagger from Karl Ransom and then the sure bunting and fast legs of Toby Burner picking himself up another RBI with a safe bunt.
Tigers scored again in the seventh and with no further scored in the game won the game 7 – 1.
Karl Ransom had another brilliant game for Tigers pitching all nine innings for eight K’s and only conceding the three safe hits.
He was also the stand out with the bat with three safe hits; Toby Burner had two safe bunts a walk and was hit by a pitch to pick up three RBI’s with Brodie Foster Garth Ransom and Brad Allen having two each.
Federals’ hits were singles from Scott Simpson Brad Lynagh and Luke Hunter.
There were some outstanding efforts in junior baseball last weekend but none better that Kyall McClean playing for Centrals against South in the Under 12 Gold division.
McClean had an amazing five safe hits helping his side to a 20 – 4 win.
There was only one junior home run last weekend scored by Centrals Magpies under 12 player, Curtis Scheidl, who now has six for the season.
