South East kelp boon

THE South East is sitting on a green and smelly “goldmine of potential” biofuel, according to researchers and experts in the field.
Piles of seaweed, which wash up on the shores from Port MacDonnell to Beachport and beyond, causing grief to locals along the coast disturbed by the pungent stench, could be used to create hundreds of jobs, generate billions of dollars and reduce Australia’s carbon footprint while leaving the beaches clean. Beachport ready for SeaFari party

Beachport will be flooded with art displays, music and other entertainment from today through to Sunday (February 28) for the SeaFari 2010 Beachport Festival by the Sea.
A visual arts trail will weave an inspiring path to various Beachport locations on Friday night with sculptural icons, new paintings, a silent auction and exhibition openings featuring pieces from local, interstate and international artists. Read more

Workshops are continuing this week in the lead up to the SeaFari 2010 Beachport Festival by the Sea.
Beachport artist Dave Messenger is presenting a series of sessions to help people make lanterns inspired by the ocean theme, with the completed works to be included in a special performance on the Saturday night of the festival. Read more

Endangered mudfish discovered

The Department for Environment and Heritage recently discovered a critically endangered species of Australian mudfish at Beachport’s Sutherland Drain — a significant find, according to DEH wetland ecologist Scott Slater, who said the closest known mudfish population was at Cape Otway, Victoria. Waddling ducks trigger collision

A flock of ducks indirectly caused a $10,000 vehicle collision at Beachport on Monday morning.
A Beachport woman, aged 37, stopped her Toyota 4WD to let the ducks waddle safely across Railway Terrace about 9am when she was was rear-ended by a 36-year-old woman, also of Beachport, driving a Nissan sedan. Read more

Dredging costs stay with council

Wattle Range Council must continue to carry the burden of its Beachport Boatramp sand management issues alone after the State Government refused to provide financial support for dredging.
Built in response to consumer demand, the boatramp is the only such facility owned by the State Government, although it was financed by community input and government grants. Read more
Beachport at risk of AFL blackout

ETSA Utilities staff have mobilised to deal with an extended outage at Beachport.
The outage affects about 500 customers in the town and about 100 people in the surrounding area and is likely to extend into the evening.
The outage initially occurred at 7.50 am when a conductor came off an insulator and then a further fault was identified with a 33kV/11kV transformer at the Beachport substation. Read more
