A local man has challenged the big cat theory and wants to set the record straight on last week’s report in which Mount Burr resident Fred van der Heul claimed a big cat had mauled a sheep in the forest.
Arthur Kelm, of Rocky Camp, has urged residents to think about the facts, or “lack thereof”, surrounding the reports of dead livestock and kangaroos. Read more

Everyone saw the big cat the other night, except me. A week or so ago, farmers John and Joy knew a big cat was on their farm. In two days two calves were killed and eaten in an unusual manner.

High-tech search for Tasmanian tiger

Australia’s most prominent Tasmanian tiger and puma photographic hunter will visit Mount Gambier to set up high-tech infrared camera equipment, following a spate of recent large cat sightings and unexplained attacks on sheep in the region.
Glenburnie resident Russell Smith told The Border Watch yesterday that sheep in the Glenburnie area had been “torn to pieces by animals more powerful than foxes”. Read more

It was time to make the 130km trek to Mount Gambier again last week.
A trip to where some big cat sightings had occurred had been organised, followed by a moonlight foot patrol of places with colleague Anelia Blackie.
But directions to sites of headless and part-eaten kangaroos along with trees which had possible claw marks turned into a disaster - I got lost. Read more

It’s not just Mount Gambier and surrounding areas that big cats have been sighted. These sightings have been going on for decades, all over Australia. The Grampians Puma being one of the most popular.
During World War 2, American servicemen brought American Mountain Lions cubs into the Mount Gambier area to be used as mascots. Read more

Big cat sightings escalate

More big cats were sighted in the pine forest area near the border of South Australia and Victoria over the weekend.
Mount Gambier man Jose Lopezelara, 22, told The Border Watch he was accompanied by two friends Naomi Maddisin and Murdus Ashleigh when the sighting occurred. Read more
