Boats blocked for wetland day at lake

Power boats will be blocked from using the Valley Lake for one morning in January to allow a World Wetland Day event to take place.

City Council was divided over whether to restrict use of the area to allow canoe tours of the site when a letter from the Department of Environment Heritage was discussed at last week’s council meeting. Read more

Dredging costs stay with council

Wattle Range Council must continue to carry the burden of its Beachport Boatramp sand management issues alone after the State Government refused to provide financial support for dredging.

Built in response to consumer demand, the boatramp is the only such facility owned by the State Government, although it was financed by community input and government grants. Read more

Port MacDonnell Offshore Angling Club president Paul Carrison has welcomed installation of a new VHF marine repeater at The Bluff.

Marine radio infrastructure has been installed at The Bluff, near Glencoe, to improve the safety of boat operators, but uncertainty remains over whether anyone will be listening if distress calls are made. Read more

More detail wanted on powerboats

Mount Gambier City Council will encourage the city’s aquatic club to further develop its proposal for powerboat racing to return to the Valley Lake.

But approval has not yet been given.

Council this week asked for a detailed report to be submitted. Speaking at the meeting, Cr Merv White said the issue of powerboat racing had been controversial over many years. Read more

Powerboat racing could return to the picturesque Valley Lake following a 10-year break after investigations revealed there was enough deep water to stage such a spectacular event.

Powerboat racing was an iconic activity on the lake for past generations, but skyrocketing public liability insurance after September 11 and shrinking water levels forced the popular sport off the crater lake. Read more

Stranded boat towed ashore

Mount Gambier police received a coastal alert on Wednesday afternoon when a man in a tinny between Danger Point and Port MacDonnell reported his motor would not start.

It is unknown why the man became stranded.

Police contacted a local boat operator who found the vessel drifting about 1.5km offshore at 4.45pm and towed it to Port MacDonnell without incident.

Council cautious regarding boat ramp

Grant District Council has reacted with caution to a government proposal to fund the upgrade of the Blackfellows Caves boat launching facility.

The Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure’s (DTEI) proposal came with the condition that Council took over the ongoing maintenance costs of the boat ramp after completion. Read more

Beacon shortage prompts safety fear

A global shortage of the new Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) could threaten the safety of South East fishers, according to Port MacDonnell Professional Fisherman’s Association president John Ashby.

Boats traveling more than three nautical miles from shore have been required to carry the 406 Megahurtz (MHz) digital EPIRB since Sunday, as the satellite tracking system will no longer receive alerts from the 121.5 MHz analogue beacon. Read more
