Outlook improves for K&S

The directors of Mount Gambier-based transport company K&S Corporation today announced a net profit after tax of $9.2m for the half year ending December 31.
Operating revenue for the first half was $217.2m, a decrease of 12.5pc on the prior corresponding period. Read more

Call to move vagrant man

Shop owners in the hub of Commercial Street West in Mount Gambier have called for authorities to help a homeless man who has been living at the back of their premises for weeks.
According to frustrated shop owners in the area, the man — who is described as being scruffy, sporting a beard and verbally aggressive at times — should be helped and moved on from the area. Read more

Mount Gambier-based public company K&S Corporation will continue to grow with acquisition of Western Australia’s Pacific Transport.
K&S managing director Legh Winser announced agreement was reached to acquire the Perth-based firm late last week. Read more
ACCC opposes Gunns’ ITC acquisition

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will oppose Gunns’ acquisition of ITC Timber due to concerns the sale would diminish market competition.
Gunns announced at the end of August it had agreed to owner Elders’ terms of sale for the timber processing division of ITC, which is separate to the forestry and managed funds sections of the business and includes mills in Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales. Read more
Timber Tech winds up

Only one creditor of the liquidated Mount Gambier forestry-related company Timber Tech Engineering, turned up at a creditors’ meeting held in Adelaide on Tuesday.
Liquidators Freer Parker and Associates held an annual general meeting for creditors to disclose how the winding up has been conducted and how the property of Timber Tech has been disposed of in the past year. Read more
Gunns closer to control of Great Southern

Gunns appears set to take control of 42,000 hectares of Green Triangle plantations established by failed agribusiness Great Southern.
The Tasmanian timber giant has reached the final stages of negotiations to acquire the assets after previously building a strong presence in the region by buying Auspine and starting development of a major woodchip export terminal at the Port of Portland. Read more

Bedford Gambier Contracts is this year’s overall winner of the Mount Gambier City Council’s Blue Lake Business of the Year award.
The South East disability employment provider received the award at a ceremony at the Town Hall on Wednesday evening for implementing a range of water saving initiatives, including collecting stormwater for use on site, recycling water used in the nursery on its Mount Gambier premises and techniques to minimise evaporation from plants.
