Wives weigh into quota fight

Wives of Port MacDonnell commercial cray fishermen anticipate tough financial times in the next few months with detrimental effects to families and business in the face of a shorter fishing season and a lower commercial catch quota.

The group of women said fishing families would have to tighten their belts drastically, deckhands would lose their jobs and fishermen would be exposed to more danger at sea when the season starts in November. Read more

Trial aims to improve viticulture process

The South East Natural Resources Management board has funded Precision Agriculture Association (SPAA) to pilot a one year project to increase the adoption of precision viticulture (PV) by grape growers.

Fishing quota cut creates waves

An already divided South East lobster fishing community is heading for the rocks following the announcement of a shorter fishing season and lower catch quota for 2010-11, with claims the decision could force some operators out of the industry.

Fisheries Minister Michael O’Brien’s announcement that he would slash the season by two months and the total allowable commercial catch quota by 150 tonnes has been met with a wave of animosity from South East rock lobster fishermen, although it has netted approval from one sector. Read more

UPPER South East farmers Jamie and Josie Jackson have been named the SA Tree Farmers of the Year.
They will be presented with a commemorative plaque at the Australian Forest Growers 2010 conference in Mount Gambier from October 10 to 13 and represent the state in the National Tree Grower of the Year Award competition, with the winner to be announced at The Barn on Tuesday, October 12.  Read more

Wagyu producer takes top food honour

Full blood Wagyu beef from Millicent’s Mayura Station has been awarded a gold medal at the National Produce Awards for the second consecutive year.

The ultra-premium beef produced on some of the Limestone Coast’s richest grazing land was a stand-out entry in the “From the Paddock” category, out-shining some of the country’s best pork, quail, veal, rabbit and lamb. Read more

Violence threatens taxi service future

A local taxi company operator has threatened to take his taxis off the road after two recent attacks on his drivers has left fellow workers fearing for their lives.

Lake City Taxis owner Knud Rasmussen said he feared for the safety of his taxi drivers after one driver was allegedly threatened with a knife a few weeks ago and another was brutally assaulted on a recent Friday night. Read more

Coonawarra development enters liquidation as hope fades for creditors

Coonawarra Developments has entered liquidation after its administrator told unsecured creditors there was no hope they would receive any money and no other options remained for the company at a meeting on Friday.

Coonawarra Developments is the owner of Poplars Winery and Chardonnay Lodge, which went into voluntary administration early this year with debts spiralling to more than $10m.
