Record breaking Cancer Council fundraiser

MORE than $200,000 was raised through the 2010 Limestone Coast Relay For Life, providing a huge boost from the community to cancer research and support programs.

A record preliminary amount of $205,902 had been raised on Sunday morning, with other funds still to be finalised after more than 800 people took part in the weekend event.

THE Cancer Council SA has welcomed the Liberal Party’s commitment to contribute an additional $4m over four years to support the Patient Assistance Transport Scheme (PATS).

The scheme which provides financial assistance to regional patients travelling to major centres for treatment for cancer or other illnesses. Read more

Call to support regional cancer patients

Cancer Council of SA is calling on the State Government to provide more support for South East cancer patients amid revelations that patients only receive a $30 rebate per night for accommodation and 16 cents per kilometre to travel to Adelaide for life-saving treatment.

The Cancer Council has launched a campaign to improve the help given to regional cancer patients in the lead-up to next month’s state election. Read more

Teenagers not so sun smart

The South Australian Cancer Council has urged the State Government to enforce SunSmart policies in all schools to help fight skin cancer as new research finds an alarming number of youths continue to put themselves at risk.

“A recent survey showed only 7pc of teenagers are practising the three key SunSmart behaviours — slip, slop, slap — and alarmingly, the majority of those interviewed admitted they preferred to be tanned,” Cancer Council SA chief executive Professor Brenda Wilson said. Read more

Grant District Council has called on the Mount Gambier Hospital and its Health Advisory Committee to explore opportunities available for a regional cancer centre.

This follows the Federal Government announcing it has committed $560m to set up regional cancer centres across Australia. Read more

Support group for ovarian cancer
