Penola priest welcomes Mary’s sainthood

It’s now official that Mary MacKillop will become Australia’s first saint.
The announcement that Mary and five others will be canonised on October 17 was made by Pope Benedict at the Vatican on Friday night Australian time.

Sainthood decision looms

A possible announcement regarding the canonisation of Blessed Mary MacKillop has moved a step closer and could be known by Friday.
Pope Benedict XVI is scheduled meet in a solemn consistory with Cardinals and Bishops in Rome on February 19.
All the Postulators for the candidates for canonisation, including Sr Maria Casey, Postulator for the Cause of Mary MacKillop, will be present from 11am (Rome time) to pray with the pontiff.
Afterwards, the Pope will announce the names of those to be canonised and the date for the canonisation ceremony that will take place in Rome.
Church moves to reclaim Valentine’s Day

The Catholic Church has moved to reclaim St Valentine’s Day in a campaign focusing on the historical meaning of the saint’s feast day and the importance of romance in marriage.
The national initiative, featured in an article in the February issue of The Southern Cross, provides parishes and Catholic school families with practical suggestions for celebrating St Valentine’s Day and encouraging married couples to spend more time together. Read more
Chalice wine approved for Christmas

South East Catholics will be able to resume receiving Holy Communion in the form of consecrated wine from the chalice, starting with masses at Christmas.
The Archbishop of Adelaide, Philip Wilson, has instructed Catholic priests to resume distributing Holy Communion from the chalice, following advice from health authorities that swine flu cases in South Australia have abated. Read more

Pope Benedict XVI has approved a decree recognising a second miracle attributed to the intercession of Blessed Mary.
The approval means Blessed Mary is likely to be formally declared a saint at a canonisation ceremony next year. Read more
Ambassador monitors sainthood push

Australia’s Ambassador to the Holy See, Tim Fischer, has told The Border Watch he is monitoring progress on the campaign to secure the sainthood of Blessed Mary MacKillop.
“The Pope has told me he has great interest in the case,” the former Deputy Prime Minister said.
Mr Fischer said the interstate pilgrims trail between Portland and Penola, linking important sites in the life of the woman who could become Australia’s first saint, had great tourism potential.
Mount Gambier child rape revealed

A high-profile ABC Radio announcer and former Federal MP, Eoin Cameron, has revealed how he was raped as a 12-year-old student at a Mount Gambier boarding school in the 1960s.
Cameron disclosed his traumatic experiences in an interview with fellow ABC announcer Geoff Hutchinson on Friday.
Cameron said he recently received a settlement and formal apology from the Catholic Church for the abuse. Read more

MacKillop centenary celebrations a success

Penola and Mount Gambier were at the centre of national celebrations to mark the weekend’s centenary of the death of Blessed Mary MacKillop with church services, art exhibitions and an orchestral work premiere.
Six hundred school students converged on Penola’s Rymill Hall on Friday to mark the occasion, with Mary MacKillop Memorial School, Tenison Woods College and Edenhope’s St Malachy’s, Millicent’s St Anthony’s and Coleraine and Casterton’s Sacred Heart schools taking part. Read more
