Cemetery expansion fight

Grant District Council has lashed out at a suggestion the Port MacDonnell Cemetery be expanded onto the car park at the site to leave an area of vegetation on the facility’s fringe untouched.

Councillors have rejected a proposal by the Native Vegetation Council to use the existing car park for burials and relocate the parking area to the northern side of the cemetery.

“Over my dead body will people be buried in the car park,” Cr Alex Deak said in a council meeting on Monday. Read more

New hope to bury cemetery saga

Grant District Council is confident it can now finally bury the long-running saga over the expansion of the Port MacDonnell cemetery.

At council’s full meeting on Monday night, councillors were told it was likely the Native Vegetation Council would allow a small expansion at the site to meet the needs of the coastal community for the next 50 years. Read more

Service clubs erect new cemetery fence

A combined service clubs effort has seen the construction of a new fence around the Lake Terrace Cemetery.

Members of the Mount Gambier West Rotary Club, Gambier City Lions and Mount Gambier Lions worked Saturday mornings for three months to complete the job. Read more

Minister firm on cemetery extension

Environment Minister Jay Weatherill has refused to budge under pressure from the Grant District Council to clear native vegetation at the Port MacDonnell Cemetery so that residents can be buried with their forefathers.

Mr Weatherill said in a statement to The Border Watch that cemetery reserves often provide refuge for remnant native vegetation. Read more

Residents deride phantom parrot

A Port MacDonnell resident has offered to drive the bulldozer for Grant District mayor Don Pegler to clear native vegetation at the historic Port MacDonnell Cemetery site.

“I am prepared go to jail for it in his place,” Jim Mason, who lives behind the cemetery, said.

Feathers flew earlier this week over the impact on the endangered orange-bellied parrot and other bird species if council clears a 10-metre strip of land adjoining the cemetery. Read more

The fight to extend the historic Port MacDonnell Cemetery has reached flashpoint with Grant district mayor Don Pegler warning he will drive the bulldozer and risk jail to clear native vegetation at the site.

Anger has erupted over news the State Government will only allow a 0.13ha (10 metre) extension of the cemetery, despite a six-year battle by Grant council to have the rules changed. Read more
