Bushfire appeal donations dumped

Material donated in relief efforts last year to support those affected by Victoria’s devastating Black Saturday bushfires appears to have been dumped in landfill.
Last week, The Border Watch received sensitive information alleging charity goods donated to the fire relief campaign had been discarded at the Carpenter Rocks landfill. Read more
Dancers step out to support charity

RESIDENTS of the South East will have a chance to dust off their dancing shoes and help the children of Cambodia by supporting the efforts of a Mount Gambier volunteer.
Rachael Stratford will travel to Cambodia at the end of the month where she will volunteer at the COSO Orphanage and the Volunteer Development Children’s Association — a school founded by Buddhist monks for children who could not afford an education. Read more

Salvos expect high welfare demand

Firemen rake in cash booty

The South East Metropolitan Fire Service gathered $1974.50 in booty when the firefighters struck Mount Gambier’s pubs on Friday night, filling their giant money boxes with donations for the region’s Angel Flight charity.
MFS regional manager George Rodis said the annual “Shake a Boot” event was a resounding success — not one boot-shaped collection box went untouched. Read more

Charity licences revoked

Gambling Minister Tom Koutsantonis has warned South Australians not to donate money to three charities which are currently under investigation.
The Acting Liquor and Gambling Commissioner has revoked the licences of Friends of the Disabled Children’s Task Force (also known as FDCTF) and Friends of the Underprivileged Children’s Task Force (also known as FUCTF), while a licence has been refused to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease of Australia (also known as COPD). Community wellbeing grants announced

The Stand Like Stone Foundation has allocated grants to the value of almost $5100 to projects across the Limestone Coast.
Executive officer Sally Klose said the foundation’s grant program aimed to spread its support across the region for a diverse range of charitable projects. Read more
Yohei cycles for youth

Yohei Takahashi, a 21-year-old university student from Japan, is currently riding a pushbike across Australia in an epic 7000km “Ride for Youth” to raise money for young Australians suffering from homelessness, addiction or mental illness.
Yohei is expected to arrive in Mount Gambier about 5pm on Wednesday.
Studying English in Brisbane, Yohei saw a level of poverty – particularly among young people – he hadn’t seen in Japan. Read more
Salvos need more collectors

Thousands of South East doors will be “knocked” on this weekend as Salvation Army volunteers collect for the 2009 Red Shield Appeal.
About 50 volunteers will take to the streets on Saturday and Sunday, but Salvation Army Mount Gambier major Steve Black said 100 were needed to cover Mount Gambier. Read more
