New report flags climate change impact

A new document from the region’s peak government environmental management body claims overuse is the greatest threat to the region’s unconfined aquifer.

The report states irrigators are the largest user group, with more than 450,000 megalitres pumped from the resource each year. Read more

Caves face climate change threat

The Federal Government has warned the World Heritage-listed Naracoorte Caves could be damaged by climate change.

According to the report — prepared by the Australian National University — the mammal sites at the caves were among 17 World Heritage-listed sites under threat. Read more

Sunspot researcher visiting Mt Gambier

Farmers concerned about carbon trading

The impact of carbon trading on farmers is developing into the single biggest issue in the history of Australian agriculture, according to a state spokesman for the sector.

Kalangadoo grazier and South Australian Farmers Federation board member Kent Martin said it was not just the potential for tax-break “carbon sink forests” to compete for prime agricultural land and water that was of concern. Read more

Talks planned on carbon tax impact

A South East Liberal MP will spearhead talks with one of the region’s largest forestry industry employers, following ongoing concerns over the impact of the looming carbon tax.

Member for MacKillop and Shadow Minister for Energy and the Environment told The Border Watch yesterday the Opposition would talk with major energy users across the state, including Kimberly-Clark near Millicent and OneSteel at Whyalla. Read more
