Crop potential looks promising

South Australian crops are looking good, with paddock preparation and seeding well advanced, according to the latest State Government crop and pasture report.

The Advisory Board of Agriculture has developed a new simple tool for grain growers to work out their cost of production and profitability on farm.

The electronic spreadsheet enables farmers to enter their cost of production figures and calculate automatically their target net farm gate price. Read more

Winter crops outlook positive

Despite winter rainfall across the Australian grains belt being average or below average, the timing of the rains has been opportune and crops are in a reasonable position leading into spring, according to ABARE’s September issue of the Australian Crop Report.

“Although conditions have been variable across regions, there is optimism for an improved winter grains harvest in 2008-09,” said ABARE’s executive director Phillip Glyde. Read more
