Jobs boost from cheese factory expansion

Milk giant Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory yesterday announced a major expansion of its boutique cheese factory near Mount Gambier.
The expansion — which will boost production at the Mil Lel site from 300 to 1500 tonnes per year — is expected to create up to 25 additional jobs and will become a packaging, cutting and shredding facility for domestic product. Read more

Dairy giant Murray Goulburn will attempt to gain a stranglehold of the milk production from the South East, following an aggressive takeover bid of its rival dairy processing company.
Murray Goulburn Co-operative has informed its shareholders that it has made a proposal to acquire all shares in the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory (WCB), which has dairy suppliers across the Mount Gambier region and a holding facility and small boutique cheese factory at Mil Lel. Read more

Murray Goulburn Co-operative Co Limited (MGC) today advised its supplier-shareholders it has submitted a proposal to acquire all the shares in Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory Company Holdings Ltd (WCB).
The letter explained that MGC put a proposal to the WCB Board in December last year and that this proposal had been rejected. Read more
Dairy companies face collapse

Three companies in the Mount Gambier-based Ryan Management Group, which are linked to Carilla Dairy in Tintinara, are in all receivership.
Lomaria, the company which runs the dairy, owes unsecured creditors $6.7m; Real Agribusiness, the trustee of the land which owns the dairy, owes $203,000; and Real Dairy Management, which operates and owns the dairy equipment, owes $755,000. Read more

Carbon scheme hits dairyfarmers

Dairyfarmers will be among the hardest hit financially by the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, according to a new ABARE report.
Impacts from CPRS will vary based on the proportion of emissions intensive inputs, the emissions intensity of production and the extent to which agricultural processors also pass on their increased costs to farmers.
ABARE executive director Phillip Glyde released the report this week entitled “Effects of the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme on the economic value of farm production”. Read more

The Australian dairy industry has been shaken by the global financial downturn, according to Dairy Australia’s latest “Situation and Outlook” report.

Kraft plant withstands global pressure
