Methadone users fear loss of supply

Methadone users in Mount Gambier have been overcome with fear and panic at the prospect of severe withdrawals since the only doctor in the city licensed to prescribe their medication has left the Hawkins Medical Clinic.
A methadone user told The Border Watch she feared nausea and severe stomach cramps as her last methadone dose ran out today. Read more
New doctors’ clinic opens next week

Mount Gambier’s new doctors’ clinic will open next Tuesday and is hoping to gain support from the general public.
While the clinic, which will include a pharmacy in the complex, will start with just one doctor from Adelaide, up to four GPs are hoping to offer their services at the new centre by the middle of next year. Read more
Hospital clinic plan for more GPs

The Mount Gambier Private Hospital will consider establishing a twilight and weekend general practitioner clinic to ease the pressure on the public hospital’s emergency department.
This follows statistics released yesterday that show 12,000 people who attend the Mount Gambier Hospital’s emergency department each year could instead be treated by a GP. Read more
GP recruitment success

A project launched three years ago to attract more GPs to the Limestone Coast has been hailed a success.
In January 2006, when the “Recruit and Retain a Doc” project was launched, there was one GP in the region for every 1237 residents, but by July this year the ratio had reduced to one GP for every 1062 residents. Read more
New GP clinic to open in January

A new privately owned doctors surgery will open in Mount Gambier on January 4.
At least three full-time resident GPs will offer their services from premises in Collins Court, an established shopping complex on Jubilee Highway near the Suttontown Road intersection, but the potential exists for a fourth GP to join the practice later. Read more

Three GP vacancies already filled

The positions of three of the six GPs that are leaving Mount Gambier by the end of the year have been filled, while chances of securing the services of two more GPs are good.
In the past few months four GPs have resigned from the Hawkins Medical Clinic and two GPs from the Ferrers Medical Clinic, with all of them indicating they would leave the South East with their families by the new year. Read more

Immunisation rules set to change

From January 1 parents and guardians will need to have their children immunised within one month of their fourth birthday to retain their childcare subsidy.
Under new changes to the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register, a child is considered overdue for vaccination at the age of four years and one month, while currently vaccinations are considered overdue when a child turns five. Read more
