Firefighters battled threatening conditions yesterday, rushing from an Allendale East house fire to a burning haystack near Donovans as the damage bill climbed while heat and wind threatened broader destruction.

Donovans gains public transport

Donovans will be included in a bus trial that has involved a Portland to Mount Gambier service stopping in Nelson.

A recent review of the service, which runs on Mondays and Fridays, resulted in inclusion of Donovans for the remainder of the trial period. Read more

Proud father praises heroic rescue

The local father of a man who used a vacuum cleaner pipe to save an excavator operator from drowning on Monday has expressed pride at his son’s heroic gesture.

David Thomson, of Donovans, and his wife had visited their son David in Melbourne over the weekend and were returning home on Monday afternoon when the incident occurred.

Mr Thomson said his son described the ordeal as “horrifying”. He was yesterday dubbed a hero in the Herald Sun after saving the man as he drowned before his eyes. Read more

Tasmanian tiger sighting claimed

A Donovans man says he saw an animal on Monday afternoon that resembled a Tasmanian tiger.

Richard Elliott was driving along Dry Creek Road toward Princess Margaret Rose Cave when he observed the mystery animal near a pine plantation about 3.30pm. Read more

EPA to investigate dumping claims

Officers from the Environment Protection Authority are expected to visit the Donovans landfill today to investigate claims a contractor dumped raw sewerage at the site.

A spokesman for the EPA said yesterday information had been received from residents and an investigation would begin into an incident that occurred on May 1. Read more

Council denies poo dump

Concerns voiced by Donovans residents that raw sewerage was being dumped at the town’s landfill have been diluted by Grant District Council, with claims the material offloaded was sediment from rainwater tanks.

Residents contacted The Border Watch on Friday afternoon to report that a contractor was emptying a truckload at the site after pumping from sewerage tanks in the town. Read more

Wastewater talks in Donovans

Grant District Council leaders will visit Donovans today in an attempt to allay concerns about development of a Community Wastewater Management Scheme at the riverside town.
