New rest areas for Dukes Highway

Safety on the Dukes Highway is to be further improved following the start of construction on four new rest areas and the upgrade of three existing rest areas, part of a $6.6 million project to upgrade conditions on the Dukes highway.

The Tolmer Group of Companies has won the $2.6 million contract to undertake the construction works between Tailem Bend and the Victorian border. Read more

Road safety initiative extended

A new road safety initiative, which has already successfully prevented six potential head-on crashes, is being considered for introduction on sections of the Duke’s Highway.

Road Safety Minister, Michael O’Brien, said wire rope barriers were installed last year along the centre of Port Wakefield Road under a $2 million road safety program. Read more

$80m committed for Dukes Hwy upgrade

The Federal Government’s $26.4b “nation building” investment in Australia’s road and rail infrastructure, including $80m for the Dukes Highway, will proceed after gaining approval from all states and territories.

Tatiara Road Safety Group chairman Peter Cook has welcomed progress in securing the six-year spending program for the Dukes Highway and said he hoped it would allow for surface upgrades to address tracking marks from semitrailers and prevent aquaplaning. Read more

Safety call on ‘black ribbon of death’

Calls for common sense, rather than a dual carriageway, have been made following safety concerns along the Dukes Highway, labelled recently the “black ribbon of death”.

Upgrade call for ‘ribbon of death’

Safety upgrades have been demanded for the Dukes Highway after the fifth fatality on the highway in just four months.

The fifth fatality, which occurred on Friday, has prompted Member for Barker Patrick Secker and Coorong District Council Mayor Roger Strother to call for safety upgrades along the length of the road. Read more
