Drug affected families find support

A confidential Mount Gambier Family Drug Support Group has been established after many years of advocacy to dispel the myths and stigma attached to drug-dependency, co-morbidity and the families of sufferers.

The support group — providing an outlet for family members and friends of drug-dependent people — met for the first time last week with positive results, according to facilitator Lois Rose. Read more

TAFESA launches new training centre

More than 140 students will have new opportunities for study in Mount Gambier due to the opening of TAFE SA’s building, furnishing, and heavy vehicles and machinery centres, with the potential to attract students from throughout the South East and western Victoria.

Employment, Training and Further Education Minister Jack Snelling opened the new $4.4m facilities on Thursday, August 19,  as part of a $70m government investment in TAFE centres around the state. Read more

School arts dream comes to fruition

The Mount Gambier High School arts faculty, community and dignitaries gathered on Thursday, August 19, to celebrate the official opening of the Garry Costello Centre for Creative Arts — a haven that will continue to “build the education revolution” through self-expression.

With four art and design studios, a gallery, information technology suite, performance space that seats over 140 and plenty of storage room, the centre was described as “remarkable” by Mr Costello. Read more

Youth focus on sun safety

The Cancer Council has encouraged Australians aged 12 to 17 years to get creative and bust a myth about skin cancer by entering a short film, image or creative writing piece in the SunSmart competition before September 24.

With one in four teens getting sun burnt on a typical weekend, the competition is an opportunity to show friends and classmates how to be sun smart. Read more

University hope grows

Engineering and education degrees appear to be one step closer for Mount Gambier after a City Council meeting with university leaders on Thursday, July 29.

Members of council’s Lifelong Learning working party met with several of the region’s leaders, including UniSA head of Mount Gambier campus Dr Sarah Mott, Regional Centre for Development’s Guy Robinson and Member for Mount Gambier Don Pegler, to discuss options for bringing the courses to the city. Engineering degree urged to ease industry shortage

Industry demand for an engineering degree in Mount Gambier has reached City Council with a resolution to pressure UniSA to offer the program.

The plan comes after industry employers from Kimberley Clark and Templeton Constructions met with council’s lifelong learning working party to discuss their difficulty in finding qualified local engineers. Read more

Students gain dairy industry insight

The Cows Create Careers program officially ended late last month with a presentation day at the Barn Palais, where students listened to guest speakers before awards were given out, along with lunches packed with dairy products.

Schools across the South East were recently involved in the initiative, which is a project of DairySA and Dairy Australia attempting to promote career pathways in the industry. Read more

Students explore dairy career potential

Students from 10 South East schools have been learning about the dairy industry for the past three weeks while caring for calves as they participated in Dairy Australia’s Cows Create Careers project.

The project aims to educate secondary and primary school students each year about the vocational and university careers pathways in the dairy industry and place emphasis on the importance of the sector to the local community. Read more

Councils demand Youth Allowance equality

A joint effort to lobby the Federal Government has stepped up to amend Mount Gambier’s Youth Allowance classification boundaries from “inner” to “outer” regional.

The District Council of Grant passed a motion during a council meeting on Monday evening to call on Mount Gambier City Council and Wattle Range Council to jointly lobby for the change to enable more students to qualify for Youth Allowance. Read more

Reefugees given first football experience

Australian Rules football is moving forward as a cultural integration tool, with refugee children at Mount Gambier North Primary School learning the game to aid their transition into the community.

The school, along with the South Australian National Football League last week held Mount Gambier’s first practical program helping more than 35 relocated children learn about Australia’s signature sport. Read more
