National curriculum challenge ahead

South Australian and Victorian educators are grappling with how to deliver on the Federal Government’s commitment to introduce a national curriculum next year for students from kindergarten to Year 10.
The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) this week released a draft K-10 national curriculum for English, maths, science and history. Read more
Glencoe kindergarten to relocate

Glencoe District Kindergarten will be relocated to new facilities at the town’s primary school.

UniSA growth predicted in Mount Gambier

Activity may boom at Mount Gambier’s UniSA campus if the course offerings can expand in coming years, according to regional centre head Sarah Mott.
She welcomed more than 60 students to the campus for 2010 yesterday as the academic year began.
“The majority of the students are from the Limestone Coast, which demonstrates the need for regional tertiary education,” Dr Mott said. Read more
Youth Allowance remains stalled

The head of Mount Gambier’s University of South Australia campus has called for the government Youth Allowance bill to be passed in Federal Parliament this week as the new tertiary study year begins.

Trade school officially opened

Almost 120 school-based apprentices have already signed up to be part of the Limestone Coast Trade School for the Future, where new facilities were opened on Wednesday.
Based at Grant High School, the centre services partner schools throughout the region, from Bordertown to Kingston and south to Allendale East. Read more
Principals learn about neuroscience

More than 100 education leaders from across the Limestone Coast converged on Mount Gambier City Hall yesterday and Sunday for a conference focused on tapping into neuroscience research to enhance classroom learning.
Renowned scientist Martin Westwell, director of the Flinders Centre for Science Education in the 21st Century, discussed recent studies and their implications for children. Read more

Further Education Minister Michael O’Brien has reassured the Mount Gambier community that its TAFE campus will not be downsized and the restructuring process that caused some unrest at the facility was over.
During a two-day whistlestop tour of Mount Gambier and the Lower South East yesterday, Mr O’Brien said the government wanted to continue to expand the learning opportunities. Read more

Mount Gambier parents have expressed mixed views on the newly launched My School website ranging from support to disapproval and disinterest.
