Five candidates for the seat of Barker were officially confirmed by the Australian Electoral Commission on Friday, with a surprise nomination from the Climate Sceptics’ Steven Davies.

Divisional returning officer for Barker Jim Leane announced the candidates and their places on the ballot cards on Friday after nominations closed at noon on Thursday. Read more

Election outcome down to the wire

The race for the seat of Mount Gambier tightened yesterday (Tuesday, March 23) with another 1000 votes counted, but supporters for the independent candidate Don Pegler have predicted he should scrape through.

In a contest that is expected to go down to the wire and possibly a handful of votes, Liberal hopeful Steve Perryman yesterday closed the gap by 127 votes between the two contenders.

After the flow of preferences yesterday, Mr Pegler’s margin has been reduced to 471. Read more

Potential for postal votes to delay election result

A RECORD number of postal votes have been issued for the State Election.

By the close of business last Friday, the Electoral Commission had processed almost 80,000 applications for postal votes.

Perryman takes leave as city mayor

Mount Gambier mayor Steve Perryman will take a leave of absence from his role for nearly two months to concentrate on his election campaign, but will not stand down from the city’s top civic position.

If Mr Perryman loses his campaign to become the Liberal MP for Mount Gambier, he revealed yesterday he intended to return to his mayoral position. Read more

Bookmaker backs Labor to win poll

The Labor government has opened a raging $1.10 favourite with leading election bookmaker Centrebet to retain power next year, with the Liberal Party under new leader Isobel Redmond now a long $6.25 outsider.

Centrebet media chief and political analyst Neil Evans said the struggling Liberals had clawed back some ground under Martin Hamilton-Smith, but this had evaporated after the “dodgy documents” scandal and leadership struggle. Read more

AEC plans electoral roll check

The Australian Electoral Commission will conduct a targeted door knock in the Barker electorate this month to ensure people were correctly enrolled to vote.

Glenelg Shire residents who have turned 18 and are not enrolled to vote are urged to do so by 4pm on Friday, October 3.
