Two young men saved from burning car

A 63-year-old farmer from Furner saved the lives of two teenaged car crash victims when he helped them escape from a burning vehicle on Saturday night.
Peter Varcoe and his wife were travelling on the Robe-Penola Road about 11.30pm when an oncoming vehicle spun out of control at a bend and crashed. Read more

Evacuation efforts commended

Mount Gambier’s fire chief has praised the successful mass evacuation of hundreds of people from two crowded venues in separate incidents within 48 hours.
The Skin 216 nightclub on Commercial Street West was evacuated in the early hours of Sunday morning when a carbon dioxide (CO2) alarm was activated. Read more

Emergency call system centralised

The redirection of calls to the 131 444 Police Assistance telephone number and Triple Zero Emergency in regional areas will begin on July 1.
The new system will be introduced in stages, and ultimately all Triple Zero calls made in South Australia will be directed to the police Communications Centre in Adelaide. Read more
Centralised call-out centre criticised

Wattle Range CFS group officer Mike Kemp has criticised the State Government, claiming its centralised communications system has seen a lack of prompt emergency service response to regional areas.
The criticism comes after more than 20 minutes elapsed in which the CFS was not alerted to a vehicle accident 50km north of Milllicent on Sunday. Read more
Rescue chopper campaign continues

Grant District Council will continue to lobby for a rescue/ambulance helicopter to be based in the South East in a move to improve the survival of accident victims and those with life-threatening conditions.
Council will write to Inspector John Robinson, of Hamilton Police, asking how South West Victoria was able to win support from the Victorian Government for a rescue chopper. Read more
