Engineering degree urged to ease industry shortage

Industry demand for an engineering degree in Mount Gambier has reached City Council with a resolution to pressure UniSA to offer the program.

The plan comes after industry employers from Kimberley Clark and Templeton Constructions met with council’s lifelong learning working party to discuss their difficulty in finding qualified local engineers. Read more

Students gain dairy industry insight

The Cows Create Careers program officially ended late last month with a presentation day at the Barn Palais, where students listened to guest speakers before awards were given out, along with lunches packed with dairy products.

Schools across the South East were recently involved in the initiative, which is a project of DairySA and Dairy Australia attempting to promote career pathways in the industry. Read more

Freight funds anger

Crucial transport network upgrades to prevent a pending South East transport disaster appear to not be a priority for the Federal Government, but advocates have vowed to continuing lobbying for action that they believe is urgent.

A delegation of local officials and industry stakeholders from both Victoria and South Australia met in a united front with Infrastructure Minister Anthony Albanese’s advisers in Canberra earlier this week to push for funding for works outlined in the Green Triangle Freight Action plan. Read more

Fishers call for lobster season cut

Representativesof the local rock lobster fishing industry are hopeful of a shorter 2010-11 season with reduced quotas after this year’s season ended at an all-time low for some.

Port MacDonnell Professional Fisherman’s Association president John Ashby said although efforts from fishermen were up this season, catches were down with boats hauling in just 6kg to 30kg per day, leaving the sector a predicted 100 to 150 tonnes short of its 1400 tonne total allowable commercial catch quota this season. Union rejects penalty rates cut

ForestrySA appears set to push ahead with a proposal to cut double time penalty rates for employees on fire duty, despite continued opposition from the workers’ union at a meeting on Tuesday, May 11.

Two thirds of forestry workers recently rejected a proposed enterprise bargaining deal due to the condition when it was forced to a ballot, according to Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) official Travis Lawson. Read more

ACCC raises dairy takeover bid concerns

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has warned the proposed merger between two regional milk giants could substantially lessen competition in the South East of South Australia.

The commission has released its preliminary views of the proposed merger between Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory and Murray Goulburn, but is not expected to announce its final decision until June.

While the Warrnambool-based company is against the merger, rival milk processor Murray Goulburn has been aggressively pushing the move. Read more
