Food producers feel subsidy bite

Agricultural sectors such as dairying have been left to compete unfairly for land and water after the government boosted forestry managed investment schemes at the expense of other primary industries, according to a new national report.
The Federal Government subsidy to forestry plantation managed investment schemes cost around $1b over the five years ending in 2008, according to Australian National University economist Dr Judith Ajani. Read more

An innovation at local cricket this summer is the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier Lakes food van.
Club members are offering a barbecue and cool drinks at one day and twenty/20 matches at Frew Park from their $20,000 catering van.
Rotarian Graham Robinson said the van provided a barbecue lunch and cool drinks at good prices. Read more

Two South East finalists in food awards

Mayura Station and the Limestone Coast Food Group have been named as finalists in the Premier’s Food Awards.
They are among 23 businesses across the state to be named as finalists.
The finalists are responsible for producing a smorgasbord of edible delights, ranging from capers, zesty blood orange extra virgin olive oil, premium A2 milk, rabbit schnitzels, sustainably farmed tuna and hand-made chocolate dessert crackers. Read more

A Mount Gambier wholesale bakery owner who supplies food to more than 37 outlets in the region has pleaded guilty to breaching eight counts of the Food Standards Code.
Glenburnie Bakery — Bread Bin proprietor David Allen Peckham, 34, appeared before the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court yesterday on charges laid by Mount Gambier City Council. Read more

People with an allergy or intolerance to gluten have been warned not to consume certain Two Minute Chef products which have been recalled from the shelves.
The ready-to-eat products Two Minute Chef, Macaroni with Cheese sauce, Spaghetti Bolognese and Black Pepper with Rice, all packed in cardboard boxes with trays and sachets inside, have been recalled due to containing undeclared gluten. Read more
