Big crowd for AFL NAB challenge

Depending on who you talk to, Saturday’s crowd at the Port Adelaide v Collingwood NAB Challenge match at Malseed Park was somewhere between 3500 and 6000 people.

Sunday’s major metropolitan newspapers in Adelaide and Melbourne both gave different figures, whilst the AFL yesterday listed 3500 as an approximate figure.

Umpiring roadshow visits

The 2010 AFL Umpiring Roadshow arrived in the state’s South East yesterday and Mount Gambier will be the centre of attraction today and tomorrow.

This is the first time the Roadshow has visited this region after touring the Fleurieu and Eyre Peninsula last year. Read more

Malseed Park to host AFL match

West Gambier’s Malseed Park has won the right to host an AFL NAB Challenge practice match in mid-March.

The game has been scheduled for the afternoon of March 13, prior to the NAB Cup grand final, which is to be played later that night at a venue — and state — still to be determined. Read more

Mt Gambier to host AFL NAB Challenge

Mount Gambier will host an AFL NAB Challenge pre-season match in 2010.

The competition, which consists of teams that have been bundled out of the NAB Cup, will see games held all over the country.

The Mount Gambier fixture will be played in week three of the competition on the weekend of March 12 – 13, with details to be confirmed. Read more

East mourns death of Brent Green

The East Gambier Football Club this week mourned the loss of former player Brent Green, who accidentally drowned while surfing on the Gold Coast.

Green was a former Brisbane Bears and Sydney Swans AFL player, who had one season in the Western Border Football League earlier this decade. Read more

MSE plans pre-season competition

The Mid South East Football League has announced plans to launch a pre-season competition in 2010.

At its annual meeting held recently, returned president Peter Mitchell said the one-day tournament would be held at Mount Burr two weeks before the season commencing. Read more

Junior football tribunal penalty criticised

After being found guilty of striking another player by the football tribunal during an under 16 game at Millicent, a player of the Millicent Football Club will now miss only three games and two more if he offends again.

The offender struck the other player in the face, behind play, then informed him “the umpires didn’t see that” before walking away, leaving the boy bleeding badly. Read more

Football final booze tests

Police will be patrolling roads leading away from the Mid South East Football Netball League second semi-final at Kalangadoo on Saturday in a bid to dissuade potential drink-drivers from risking lives.

The South East under 15 and 17 took out their division in the 2009 South Australian Junior Country Football Championships in Adelaide last week.
