Libs rule out forward selling forests

Opposition leader Isobel Redmond has ruled out a future Liberal Government forward selling timber plantings.

Ms Redmond made the announcement at Tarpeena as part of a two-day visit by the State Liberals to Mount Gambier.

“Treasurer Kevin Foley raised the possibility of the forward sale of three rotations of timber growth in December 2008,” Ms Redmond said. Read more

Forestry pay talks stumble

More than 100 Mount Gambier workers could be involved in industrial action after a breakdown in talks between ForestrySA and the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union.

CFMEU South East organiser Travis Lawson has written to the head of the forestry corporation stating he is breaking away from enterprise bargaining negotiations and consulting with members about future action. Read more

Treasury coy on forward tree sales

Taxpayers could pay dearly for half a century if the State Government sells off future rotations of ForestrySA plantations and gets the price wrong, according to a South East union leader.

Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union spokesperson Brad Coates said Treasurer Kevin Foley’s proposal to sell off three rotations of pine trees would not address failures to properly manage the estate. Read more

Plantation sales ‘unchartered territory’

Executives of ForestrySA are still seeking answers to questions resulting from Treasurer Kevin Foley’s proposal to investigate a forward sale of up to three rotations of the state’s pine plantations, predominantly based in the South East.

Mr Foley suggested in December last year the concept be investigated as a potential way to secure capital investment to support the state’s international credit rating as preparations are made for major infrastructure investment in Adelaide. Read more

Exports boost ForestrySA dividend

Export of logs helped ForestrySA secure a strong performance for the 2008-09 year, despite the controversial practice attracting criticism from union officials who claimed the sales sent labour overseas.

The corporation’s 2008-09 annual report was released online yesterday, with chief executive Brian Palmer declaring a dividend of $15.2m to the South Australian Government for the year. Read more

New forestry training initiative

A Commonwealth initiative will fund 48 timber industry-related qualifications within the region.

The recent funding announcement is the result of a ForestrySA funding submission, which was completed with industry support to benefit the broader sector.

As a result of the collaborative approach, almost $290,000 was secured for training in identified skill-shortage areas from the Federal Government’s Productivity Places Program for Existing Workers. Read more

Controlled burns under way

Controlled burns have begun across the Green Triangle this week as ForestrySA prepares for the fire season.

Minister rules out stockpiling logs

Stockpiling until the economy recovers is not an option for around 100,000 tonnes of ForestrySA timber set for export, according to Forestry Minister Paul Caica.

The Border Watch asked Mr Caica during his visit to the South East last week whether putting sale of the wood on hold would end a debate with the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union, which claims the export would equate to 100 local jobs going overseas. Read more
