South East likely to suffer job cuts

The South East is expected to see more job losses in the public sector as a result of the State Government Budget for 2009 – 2010.

Public Service Association South Australia chief industrial officer Peter Christopher said while the expansion to the Mount Gambier prison would see some employment growth, both during construction and in the longer-term, this was likely to be outweighed by cuts. Read more

Youth Allowance changes unfair

In Mount Gambier, taking a gap year between high school and university has become the only way for most students to be able to afford the huge expense of higher education.

Of the 100+ students who enrolled in Year 12 at Mount Gambier High School in 2008, only two went on to university straight away, the rest have been hard at work this year in our local community, attempting to earn $19,500 to be deemed as independent under the old Youth Allowance guidelines. Students protest Youth Allowance changes

South East students are reconsidering tertiary education after proposed changes to eligibility criteria for Youth Allowance were announced in the Federal Budget.

In a blow to thousands of young people, they will no longer qualify for Youth Allowance under the option of earning 75pc of the minimum wage in a gap year, or $19,532, if the changes are passed. Read more

State supply switch hurts local business

A State Government decision to establish a central base to distribute supplies to South Australian hospitals is expected to cost a local business more than $150,000.

Jaypak Distributors has operated in Mount Gambier for decades and employs 10 people, with its five vans covering a 7000km network across the region to deliver items from Kimberly-Clark and other manufacturers. Read more

TAFE staff stuck in ‘transit lounge’

An angry Mount Gambier TAFE worker has raised fresh allegations the State Government is beginning to cut employment contracts at the facility as part of a move to significantly slash operating costs.

While senior management positions are earmarked to be cut under a major restructure, it is understood a number of staff on contracts are now facing the unemployment queue. Read more
