New anti-dumping laws risk flushing away jobs

GRANT District Council will spearhead a move to call on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to meet with South East councils in a bid to stop up to 4000 South East jobs potentially being flushed away.
The development follows fears reversal of anti-dumping rules for paper import products into Australia could trigger South East industry giant Kimberly-Clark Australia to close its massive South East operations. Read more
Aged care development approved

Grant District Council’s independent planning assessors have given the green light to the $2.72m rebuild of The Oaks Nursing Home.
Council planning and development director Leith McEvoy said the approval was given for a 42-bed new facility at the Yahl site. Read more
Council braces for climate change impact

Grant District Council has started planning for possible changes to the environment fuelled by climate change.
Council has put a number of trigger points in place regarding rising temperatures and sea levels that will spark potential action.
At council’s full meeting on Monday night, chief executive Russell Peate said council could not ignore the warnings of climate change and must be prepared. Read more
New hope to bury cemetery saga

Grant District Council is confident it can now finally bury the long-running saga over the expansion of the Port MacDonnell cemetery.
At council’s full meeting on Monday night, councillors were told it was likely the Native Vegetation Council would allow a small expansion at the site to meet the needs of the coastal community for the next 50 years. Read more
Council unhappy with power cuts

Grant District Council has written to ETSA Utilities to highlight a string of power outages at Port MacDonnell this year.
This follows a number of letters and phone calls to The Border Watch about power problems in recent weeks.
It is understood some residents have had their power drop out more than 15 times in a day. Read more
Have your say on boundary changes

Mount Gambier City Council has begun a formal community consultation process on the boundary adjustment proposal and encourages comments from ratepayers.
“While there has already been significant media coverage of the issue, both councils are required to consult with their respective communities and consider any submissions that are received prior to a final submission to the State Government Boundary Adjustment Facilitation Panel,” deputy mayor Byron Harfield said. Biomass pellet plant in limbo

The construction of the $30m biomass pellet plant near Mount Gambier is in limbo following a number of residents appealing the decision through the court system.
Proposed to be the first pellet plant of its kind in South Australia and only the second in Australia, the plant is expected to manufacture 250,000 tonnes of pellets per year by using forest residue for the export market. Read more
Port MacDonnell concept plans released

Grant District Council has unveiled concept plans to revitalise the Port MacDonnell foreshore and the Tenterden Reserve, but has stressed no work will be undertaken unless it is given the green light from the community.
Unveiled at its council meeting on Monday night, the redevelopment blueprint includes major revegetation works, reconstructed sand dunes, new carpark and boating parking and even a large-scale boat to represent the wreck of the Tenterden. Read more

Boundary adjustment welcomed

One of the city’s largest housing developers has welcomed the decision to extend the city’s outer boundaries because it gives builders a long-term blueprint of future residential growth areas.
Empak Homes spokesperson Michael Mitchell welcomed the decision announced on Monday, which proposes the handing over of nearly 700ha of land to Mount Gambier City Council by Grant District Council. Read more
