Martin Hamilton-Smith issued a media statement late this morning, saying he will not contest the leadership ballot on Wednesday.

On Saturday, Mr Hamilton-Smith defeated Vickie Chapman 11 – 10 in a spill motion.

The confirmed contenders on Wednesday are Ms Chapman, Isobel Redmond and Mitch Williams. Read more

Mitch Williams quits Shadow Cabinet

South East Liberal MP Mitch Williams has publicly called for his embattled leader to resign while quitting the frontbench himself in a dramatic move to force a change of leadership.

Mr Williams told The Border Watch he would contest the leadership if it became vacant.

Following the fake documents political scandal that engulfed the party in recent months, Mr Williams claimed Martin Hamilton-Smith’s leadership was now not viable and it was time for him to go. Read more

Health Minister renews hospital pledge

Health Minister John Hill has again pledged the State Government’s commitment to improving health services in Mount Gambier.

Mr Hill yesterday promised six new interns and two paediatricians at the Mount Gambier Hospital in the new year, more elective surgery and “obviously” additional funding. Read more

Health shapes as key election issue

Health will be a key battleground in the 2010 State Election, according to Opposition leader Martin Hamilton-Smith.

He told a Liberal Party function at the Commodore Motel on Friday night that health was always a key issue in regional communities, but even more so now as a result of the Government’s “ill-conceived” Country Health Plan. Read more
