City Council explores Old Gaol options

Mount Gambier City Council is likely to explore allowing an improved backpackers accommodation facility at the old gaol, following a number of interested parties flagging their interest in the historic site.

Mount Gambier City Council has called for community input into the future use of one of the city’s most historical landmarks, the Old Gaol.

Its current lease will expire on September 30.

Council will hold an inspection of the Old Gaol for individuals and community groups on Friday, February 12 from 4pm to 5pm and February 13, from 10.30 am to 11.30am. Read more

Heritage thanks set in stone

Names of hundreds of supporters of a project to preserve Port MacDonnell’s heritage and beautify one of the area’s most historic precincts have been set in stone.

Port MacDonnell Pioneers Committee chairman Jim Galpin and Grant District Council Mayor Don Pegler opened the Pioneer’s Heritage Path yesterday at the Woolwash Historical Reserve. Read more

Rook Walk commemoration

The Mount Gambier community will celebrate the 91st birthday of The Rook Walk this Friday.

The 203m long handmade wall is considered to be one of Mount Gambier’s most historical landmarks.

Today (Thursday) marks 150 years since the SS Admella came to grief in rough seas near Carpenter Rocks, leaving passengers and crew clinging to the wreckage a mile offshore for up to eight days.
