Shock jumps racing ban slammed

A veteran Mount Gambier jumps racing trainer has described a decision by Racing Victoria Limited to ban the sport after 2010 as an “absolute bombshell” for the local industry.
Jumps trainer John O’Connor, from Mingbool, described the decision as a shock and said it could lead to the demise of jumps racing in South Australia. Read more

Jumps spotlight turns to SA

The spotlight on jumps racing will turn to the Mount Gambier Racing Club when it hosts the 127th annual Scott Group of Companies Gold Cup carnival later this month.
Part of the two-day carnival on May 21 – 22 will be a 3400 metres steeplechase and a 3050 metres hurdle, both carrying $10,000 purses. Read more

A Mount Gambier-based jumps horse trainer has called for the sport to continue, following the Victorian industry temporarily banning hurdle racing because of fears the modular hurdles were unsafe.

A confidence-boosting victory in the open hurdle on Sunday at Casterton will see the New Zealand jumper Pasco head to Melbourne for richer spoils during the winter.
“He’ll go straight into the Grand National (hurdle) at Flemington next month without another run,” his trainer Kevin Myers said after the eight year old gelding led from pillar to post to win his first race on Australian soil. Read more
