A major new report has claimed the Limestone Coast needs to engage the high-spending sector of the tourist market and focus on building food and beverage value-adding to increase its population and workforce.
The Limestone Coast Workforce report — which analyses supply, demand and emerging trends and opportunities — also argues that without additional industry and building activity the region will only continue to grow slowly. Read more
Industry reps missing from RDA board

South East leaders have voiced disappointment at the lack of industry representation on the newly formed Regional Development Australia board for the Limestone Coast.
The board members were announced this week following the merger of the Limestone Coast Regional Development Board and the former Area Consultative Committee under national reforms involving all three levels of government. Read more

Former State Liberal Party leader Dale Baker has retained his position as chairman of the South East’s peak regional development organisation.
Mr Baker’s appointment was announced in a joint statement by the Commonwealth and South Australian governments, along with the SA Local Government Association, revealing the board of Regional Development Australia (RDA). Read more
Regional development delays criticised

Shadow Minister for Regional Development, John Dawkins, says time is running out for the State and Federal Governments to announce South Australia’s seven Regional Development Australia (RDA) boards.
Mr Dawkins has called on state minister Paul Caica and federal parliamentary secretary Maxine McKew to expedite the appointments so funding arrangements can be finalised before the end of the year. Read more
Forestry Excellence Centre idea shelved

A vision to relocate forestry organisations from across Mount Gambier under one roof in a centre of excellence has been shelved.
Limestone Coast Regional Development Board chief executive Grant King said the scoping report into establishment of the Forestry Excellence Centre recommended the initiative not be pursued. Read more
Board CEO sues Robe mayor

Prominent Mount Gambier bureaucrat Grant King has issued legal proceedings against Robe Mayor William Peden and the coastal town’s council for defamation.
Mr King, who is chief executive of the Limestone Coast Regional Development Board, has filed litigation papers with the District Court. Read more
Town Hall lease discount offered

Mount Gambier City Council is negotiating a long-term lease agreement for the Old Town Hall at discounted rates with an organisation that may cease to exist.
According to an agenda report tabled at last month’s council meeting, an independent assessment calculated the commercial rental value at $77,245 a year. Read more

Staff reductions should be the last option to consider as a cost saver in the current economic downturn, according to Limestone Coast Regional Development Board business development manager Roger Babolka.
In response to reports of downsizing by employers, Mr Babolka advised there were better ways to save costs. Read more
Mayor criticises development board

The Limestone Coast Regional Development Board is “unsuitable” to handle federal money via Regional Development Australia, according to Robe mayor William Peden.
Speaking at the South East Local Government Association (SELGA) meeting in Naracoorte recently, Mr Peden said the development board “lacked good governance”. Read more
