Mayor seeks briefing on Penola pulp mill

Wattle Range Council Mayor Mark Braes will seek a briefing from Protavia on the impact the sale of Timbercorp will have on the company’s planned $1.5b pulp mill at Penola.

Penola Pulp Mill project director John Roche has not returned calls from The Border Watch, but Mr Braes said he hoped the Timbercorp takeover did not mark the end of the development. Read more

Mayor chairs Timbercorp meetings

Wattle Range Council Mayor Mark Braes was in Melbourne on Monday and in Sydney on Tuesday for meetings involving Timbercorp growers and landowners with their advisors and a consortium seeking to purchase the failed company’s extensive bluegum holdings.

Mr Braes was invited to act as independent chairman. Meetings are also scheduled for Brisbane (Saturday) and Adelaide (Monday). Read more

Wattle Range councillors gagged

Wattle Range Councillors have been gagged from giving statements to the media without prior approval from Mayor Mark Braes or chief executive Frank Brennan.

If a councillor does not comply with this policy, they will have committed a level two breach of council’s code of conduct. Read more

Outrage at Wattle Range rates

Millicent SA Farmers federation branch president Peter Altschwager is outraged by escalating rates at Wattle Range district council.

Mr Altschwager said a farm valued at $2 million, which was smaller than an average-sized farm, was charged $8360 for rates.

He said a house valued at $200,000 was levied $1136 compared with $474 in the Grant district council.
Mr Altschwager said he would consider calling a public meeting to move Glencoe and Tantanoola into Grant. Read more
