A woman has spoken out about concerns that her status as a single mother has prevented her from securing a suitable rental property after she has spent more than three months scouring the city’s vacant houses for a potential home.

Chantelle Caldow, 21, told The Border Watch that after starting the search long before returning to her hometown, she had been repeatedly rejected in the hunt for stable accommodation. Read more

Under-staffed psychiatric services concern

One psychiatrist will not be enough to maintain a long-term mental health service in the South East, according to the Australian Medical Association’s Andrew Lavender.

South Australian AMA president Dr Lavender told The Border Watch the government would need to invest in up to three psychiatrists for the region in order to retain the service, not just the promised one which Country Health SA says is currently being selected. Read more

Homeless left out in cold

Homelessness service providers have been left in the lurch in Mount Gambier as the Old Gaol has discontinued its emergency accommodation.

City Council advised Housing SA and ac.care last week that the Old Gaol, which has long been a stable source of crisis accommodation, will no longer offer the services space for their clients. Read more

Drug affected families find support

A confidential Mount Gambier Family Drug Support Group has been established after many years of advocacy to dispel the myths and stigma attached to drug-dependency, co-morbidity and the families of sufferers.

The support group — providing an outlet for family members and friends of drug-dependent people — met for the first time last week with positive results, according to facilitator Lois Rose. Read more

Strong competition drives cattle prices higher

A similar numbered  mixed quality yarding containing 757 young cattle, 591 grown steers, 356 cows and 55 bulls sold to solid trade and processor competition at the Mount Gambier and Disitrict Saleyards on Wednesday.

Feeder and restocker orders were active on small lines of young cattle and cows. Read more

Mount Gambier Cycling and Triathlon Club Members were once again battered by strong winds when 29 riders contested the final round of the Pub Series at Tantanoola recently.

TAFESA launches new training centre

More than 140 students will have new opportunities for study in Mount Gambier due to the opening of TAFE SA’s building, furnishing, and heavy vehicles and machinery centres, with the potential to attract students from throughout the South East and western Victoria.

Employment, Training and Further Education Minister Jack Snelling opened the new $4.4m facilities on Thursday, August 19,  as part of a $70m government investment in TAFE centres around the state. Read more

Mental health patients forced to Adelaide

People with acute mental illnesses in Mount Gambier and the Limestone Coast are being apprehended by police, detained and flown to Adelaide every week due to the lack of access to a local psychiatrist or acute care options.

The Border Watch can reveal Limestone Coast Police have apprehended 50 people with acute mental illnesses this year  for their safety and the safety of others. Read more

School arts dream comes to fruition

The Mount Gambier High School arts faculty, community and dignitaries gathered on Thursday, August 19, to celebrate the official opening of the Garry Costello Centre for Creative Arts — a haven that will continue to “build the education revolution” through self-expression.

With four art and design studios, a gallery, information technology suite, performance space that seats over 140 and plenty of storage room, the centre was described as “remarkable” by Mr Costello. Read more

Opperman faces ‘baptism of fire’ at Geelong tour

The popular Mount Gambier based cyclist contested his first multi-stage cycling tour last week, competing in the second round of the national Scody Cup series, which started back in 1995 as the Tattersall’s Cup. Read more
