South Australian road toll climbs

The state’s horror road toll jumped again at the weekend when a South East truck driver died after hitting a tree on the Riddoch Highway 32km north of Naracoorte.
The 56-year-old Mount Burr man was killed in the early hours of Saturday, taking the number of deaths on South Australia roads to 20 for the year so far, compared with six at the same time in 2009. Read more
Impounded car drives mates warning

Young car owners have been warned not to let mates borrow their cars after a youth was reported for misuse of a motor vehicle on Saturday night and police impounded the car, which did not belong to him.
Police apprehended the driver, a 17-year-old Naracoorte youth, on Porter Street following a public complaint regarding his manner of driving near the Moore Street swimming lake a short time earlier. Read more
Identity an issue in assault case

The case of five youths charged with viciously attacking a busload of Adelaide school students at the Naracoorte Town Square earlier this year was adjourned at the Naracoorte Youth Court yesterday.
The young men, whose names cannot be revealed, pleaded guilty to violent disturbance and being one of three or more persons present that caused others to fear for their safety. Read more

Caves face climate change threat

The Federal Government has warned the World Heritage-listed Naracoorte Caves could be damaged by climate change.
According to the report — prepared by the Australian National University — the mammal sites at the caves were among 17 World Heritage-listed sites under threat. Read more
Concern at courthouse closure

Closure of the Naracoorte Court House between sitting days will have a negative domino effect, according to Naracoorte Lucindale Mayor, Ken Grundy.
It is among four regional South Australian courts being closed by the Courts Administration Authority to meet savings targets of $3.7 million set by the Department of Treasury and Finance. Read more
Cannabis grown inside house

Naracoorte detectives arrested a 29-year-old man for cultivating cannabis for sale after police located the remnants of 29 mature plants and a sophisticated hydroponics set-up at a Gordon Street rental property on June 3.
The now vacant house was in the process of being sold, but an internal door was locked and a fan could be heard coming from inside the room. Read more
Arson causes $200,000 damage at Naracoorte

Arsonists are believed to have ignited a fierce blaze that destroyed the Naracoorte Cricket Club in the early hours of Saturday, with a damage bill of up to $200,000.
Five Naracoorte CFS units were called to the fire at the association’s Park Terrace club at 5am on Saturday, which took two hours to extinguish. Police also attended. Read more

Naracoorte is a safe place to visit, despite a recent violent rampage against passing travellers, according to local mayor Ken Grundy.
Police have alleged about six local youths terrorised and attacked a school group, which was heading to a sports carnival at Tenison Woods College in Mount Gambier, on Sunday afternoon. Read more
