Donovans gains public transport

Donovans will be included in a bus trial that has involved a Portland to Mount Gambier service stopping in Nelson.

Head-on collision investigated

Investigations will continue into Monday night’s head-on smash on the Portland-Nelson Road that saw two men trapped in their vehicles for more than an hour-and-a-half.

A Portland resident, 33, was flown by ambulance helicopter to the Warrnambool Base Hospital with lower leg injuries and a 61-year-old Mount Gambier man was taken to the Mount Gambier Hospital, also with lower leg injuries. Read more

Bushfire defence boost for Nelson

Nelson’s bushfire defences have received a major boost with the opening of a $200,000 multi-purpose facility and the handover of a new $92,000 two-seater tanker.

Fisherman caught out at Nelson

A Port MacDonnell man is the first commercial rock lobster operator from the South East of South Australia to have his boat seized for illegally fishing in Victorian waters for nearly 30 years.

The 54-year-old professional fisher faces likely charges after fisheries officers from Portland seized his boat on Thursday after discovering 14 illegal rock lobster pots two kilometres from the Glenelg River mouth. Read more

Nelson identified as being at risk

Victorian Premier John Brumby has named Nelson among 52 towns considered to be facing a significant fire risk this summer.

In detailing the government’s strategy for the coming fire danger season, Mr Brumby said the 52 at-risk communities would have individual township protection plans developed – over and above standard municipal fire prevention plans. Read more

Park fire was deliberately lit

June 15, 2009

A joint investigation by the CFA, Department of Sustainability and Environment and Victoria Police has determined that the Mt Richmond-Stanleys Rd fire in the Lower Glenelg National Park in April was deliberately lit.

The fire, which began in the national park near Mt Richmond, burnt approximately 6080 hectares of heathland and bush and took several days to contain. Read more

Celtic punk band heading to Nelson
